Simcoa Operations Pty Ltd, located near the port city of Bunbury approximately 200km south of Perth, operates Australia’s only Silicon Metal Smelter, incorporating a sawmill, high temperature charcoal plant, submerged electric arc furnaces, grinding plant, crushing and screening facilities and an off-gas filtration/fume collection baghouse. With a continuous usage of 70MW, we are one of Western Australia’s largest electrical consumers.
Simcoa is seeking a Metallurgist or Chemical / Process Engineer with 3+ experience to join their Production Team. The position undertakes process optimisation, investigates process variance and correction, quality control, and daily / monthly reporting within Simcoa Operations, in a manner that assists the safe achievement of productivity targets. There is also a requirement to assist with the management of resources and personnel on process matters.
In this position, you will be required to provide timely production, efficiency and cost reports. Provide technical assistance (both pro-active and reactive) to the operations team in the form of technical investigations. Monitor production and energy trends; investigate deviations from targets and recommend/implement corrective actions as necessary. Communicate ideas and changes in the operating process effectively, such that all team members are involved and have a chance to communicate their opinions. Cultivate a culture within the workplace that embraces safety awareness by practising and communicating a safety-first mentality.
The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate:
- Degree in Metallurgy (BSc) or Chemical / Process Engineering or equivalent
- Experience or studies in non-ferrous metal smelting is desirable
- Exposure to pyrometallurgy is desirable
- Exposure to heavy industry is desirable
- Strong interpersonal skills and a genuine interest to move in to line management in the long term if the opportunity presents
- An ability to communicate clearly and effectively – written and oral
- A demonstrated ability to make timely and sound decisions and accept individual accountability
- Initiative, self-starter, resourceful, recognises what has to be done and takes timely action
- Adaptable and flexible – able to cope with changing circumstances
- Report writing; Problem solving; time and resource management
