Job description

The Water and Wastewater - Operations Unit is seeking a team player who is passionate about the provision of safe and reliable water and wastewater services to join us as a Networks Assistant. For the passionate and enthusiastic person, we can provide a supported pathway to obtain the on the job skills and competencies in this stimulating and rewarding role workings towards a nationally recognised qualification in Water Operations (Certificate III).

About the role: 
  • provide support and assistance to our team of Network Operators in a wide range of operations and maintenance activities on the water supply network, sewerage reticulation system, and other assets.
  • assist in repairing water mains, consumer services, hydrants and stop valves, install pipelines and read water meters.  Inspecting, cleaning, maintaining and constructing sewer mains and manholes will also be involved. You may also be "called out" to provide emergency response as part of the Water Unit’s 24-hour service. 
  • the role is suitable for someone who enjoys a variety of active work in an outdoor environment. Your ability to take care of your own, your colleagues and the public's Health and Safety will see you succeed in this role.

We are seeking:
  • basic understanding and general knowledge of the operation of a sewer and water reticulation network system
  • sound general knowledge of pipe/services installation and repairs
  • demonstrated ability to work in a small team environment
  • demonstrated ability to work responsibly and independently on tasks with direction
  • willingness and commitment to complete Certificate III in Water Operations under the support and guidance of Council
  • the capacity to perform in an active and physically demanding work environment

Where it's located:

This position is based in Tweed Heads, and can be directed to work from any Council work site.

  • What is your understanding and general knowledge of the operation of a water supply and sewer network system? What are the general components of these systems to maintain

  • Do you hold a General Construction Induction Card (White Card)? 
  • Please explain your level of literacy and numeracy competence, particularly reading of job instructions and plans, maintenance of records and completion of standard reports
  • Please explain your experience in pipe laying and repairs, demonstrating with examples your general knowledge of this type of work
  • Please explain your knowledge of workplace safety procedures and your experience in using these in a workplace
  • Do you hold a Certificate III in Water Operations or a willingness and commitment to complete the qualification within 24 months of entering into a training agreement with Council?
  • Do you have the willingness and ability to meet the requirements of 24 hour “call out” emergency response service including the ability to be contactable outside of ordinary hours at all times and be able to respond within a reasonable time to emergency work.
