Job description

Directions Health Services is an innovative non-profit organisation that has provided specialist alcohol and other drug (AOD) services in the ACT and NSW for more than 40 years. Today we offer a comprehensive suite of holistic AOD, mental health and primary health services that aim to reduce harms experienced by individuals, families and communities and improve overall health and wellbeing. Directions’ service delivery team includes a Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Social Workers, Counsellors, Aboriginal Health Workers, Case Managers, Peer Workers, Support Workers, GPs, Registered Nurses, Pharmacists and Chemical Analysts. Our capacity to implement innovative services developed in collaboration with our clients, partners, and other stakeholders, enables us to effectively respond to the changing needs of the communities we serve.

Arcadia House is a 12-bed Therapeutic Community (TC) rehabilitation facility offering residential, withdrawal and day programs to support clients abstain from AOD use. As a TC, the house community itself, through self-help and mutual support, is the principal means for promoting personal change for Arcadia clients. Arcadia offers case management, counselling, therapeutic groups, and relapse prevention services to support clients through recovery. Arcadia House and the broader Directions team strives to provide a warm and welcoming environment where all employees and clients feel valued and supported. 

About the position

This position involves providing overnight support to Arcadia House residents and informing clients about programs provided by Directions and other AOD organisations and support services. We are seeking people who are motivated to participate in continuous quality improvement and safety initiatives and who understand the importance of client confidentiality and professional boundaries. We provide generous casual penalty rates and ongoing training and development opportunities that will be highly valuable for your career in AOD, Mental Health and other sectors. 

Responsibilities

  • Provide support to Arcadia House residents, including undertaking client liaison, administration duties and housekeeping duties commensurate with the position.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to work with clients who may present with complex and co-occurring issues in a non-judgmental and person-centred manner.
  • Maintain professional standards in relation to service delivery and confidentiality and work in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Participate in our staff meetings, and shared care meetings (these would be during the day).
  • Provide support and assistance to the Group Program as required.

Arcadia House is a 24-hour residential facility and you will be required to work Night Shifts and weekends.

What we would like you to have

  • Cert IV or Diploma Qualification in Alcohol & Other Drugs, Mental Health, or other relevant fields (or working towards these qualifications).
  • Experience in the AOD sector.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, combined with a proactive and hands-on attitude.
  • Skills in using Microsoft Office and electronic client information systems.
  • An ability to work effectively with minimum supervision in a small flexible team environment.
  • Reliable, punctual, and mature attitude to work.
  • An understanding of the impact of substance use and associated issues on clients/residents and their supports.
  • An understanding of and commitment to the principles of harm minimisation.
  • A current Driver’s Licence. 

All appointments will be conditional upon having a Working with Vulnerable People registration, current First Aid and CPR certification and a satisfactory National Police Check.
