Your Role
As the Operations Manager, you will play a key role in assisting in efficiently managing our clients mixed-farming operation located near Lake Boga, VIC. Reporting to the General Manager, and working closely with the Irrigation Manager, this role will see you focusing on the annual cropping activities of 700ha of processing tomato crop (reducing to 350ha in coming years) coupled with 3,000ha irrigated mixed-cropping, consisting of predominantly wheat and canola, with a combination of overhead, subsurface and flood irrigation.
Furthermore, you will also be managing an established and experienced team of 8, plus casual labour and contractors – cropping planting is done in-house, harvest is contracted.
Your responsibilities will include but are not limited to –
- Lead, mentor and develop farming operations team
- Management of day-to-day operations, planning and procurement
- Execution of annual cropping plan
- Adhere to and be an advocate for continuous improvement in OHS
- Establish and lead an efficient & effective communication program with the General Manager and other key internal stakeholders
This role will develop as the project does, thus experience growing and managing teams effectively is key. From planning and growth techniques to leadership, safety, and stakeholder engagement.
Our ideal candidate will have previous experience in commercial broadacre or horticultural farming operations as well as in a management role, with proven skills in managing large cropping properties.
As an effective leader and good communicator, you will ensure your team is trained and skilled in their areas and be committed to a culture of safety.
With competent computer skills and financial literacy, it is important you can address the following criteria:
- Minimum 4 years’ experience in farm operations and management
- Proven experience in crop planning and a proactive approach to modern farming techniques
- Knowledge of best practices for cropping (dry land & irrigated), as well as high input crops
- Ability to mentor the crew members with farming practices, irrigation technology and OHS
- Lead & coach staff on budgets and provide assistance in the creation of operational and capital budgets.
- Financial experience – budgets, reporting, forecasting and procurement
- Workforce planning and staff recruitment
- Highly organised and flexible
- Tertiary qualification(s) in agriculture, or equivalent (preferred)
