Job description

Location Profile

Osborne Primary School is a large school of around 620 students located in Mount Martha, approximately 50 kilometres southeast of Melbourne on the Mornington Peninsula. Although initially established in 1873 to serve the needs of a largely rural population, the school is now close to a rapidly growing urban area to the east of Mornington. The school makes excellent use of its location near to Port Philip Bay and to sensitive wetland and bushland areas nearby.

A collaborative learning community that challenges students to become creative thinkers, independent learners and globally responsible citizens transpires at Osborne. The values of respect, confidence, co-operation, responsibility and resilience guide us in providing a happy, caring and stimulating environment where children will recognise and achieve their fullest potential. The "Play is the Way" social skills program is implemented school wide to enhance our school values and empower our students to pursue their personal best and develop respectful relationships.

The Victorian Curriculum underpins teaching programs, which offer a stimulating learning across a broad range of areas. Teaching to suit individual students' learning needs is delivered through programs such as "Point of Need" and “STAR” problem solving teaching in Mathematics, "CAFE" reading comprehension programs and 6 + 1 writing traits in Literacy. A combination of both explicit teaching methods and inquiry learning are used throughout the school.

Four major concepts -: “Understanding, Diversity, Creating, and Sustainability” are investigated through the inquiry process across the school. The specialist programs include Visual and Performing Arts, Physical Education, Languages - Indonesian, Science and the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Project. The partnership between the school and the home is highly valued at Osborne. Parents and carers are encouraged to be actively involved in the educational progress of their child.

The Compass electronic communication system is used at Osborne to ensure families are well informed and connected to our school. Empowering students to take responsibility for their learning is integral to the students achieving their full potential. This is facilitated through opportunities for student voice, student decision making and choice. Our Student Representative Council is an active body in student decision making.

At Osborne we optimise the use of the range of School facilities. Highlights are modern junior  classrooms, art room, library and administrative blocks, the purpose built kitchen for the Stephanie Alexander Program, the Gymnasium, the Performing Arts Centre and the extensive garden areas of the school. The school makes best use of the ample range of facilities to deliver a comprehensive curriculum and engaging educational opportunities for all students.

SC2    Demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively with members of the school community including students and the capacity to provide support and/or attendant care to students where necessary through the OSHC program.

SC3    Demonstrated proficiency in the use of office systems, software or technical equipment as relevant to the position.

Role

OSHC operates on school days during school term. Before School Care hours are 6.30am to 9.00am. After School Care hours are 2.30pm - 6.30pm. Regular shifts are rostered for the school term: Tuesday and Thursday afternoons 3 -5.30pm and Friday morning 6.30 - 9am  There may also be the opportunity for additional shifts.

An education support class position at this range will perform tasks that are carried out in accordance with guidelines, accepted practice, and school policy under supervision and direction. This may include coordination of other education support class staff within the work area or educational program.

An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students but must not include duties of a teacher as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students can be required individually or in groups up to 4 in controlled circumstances and where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

Certification and/or qualifications of up to three years can be required at this level (noting that Registered Nurse is not included at this level, the first level for which is Level 1 range 3).

A role at this range may include:

  • Specific support tasks to achieve outcomes. Typically, this will involve accountability for a single function, (e.g. ensuring data is properly maintained) or the co-ordination of a work area under the direction of the principal or a manager.
  • Assisting teachers, within an educational program, by undertaking specific support tasks or the coordination of the support function.
  • Supervised health and wellbeing support tasks, medical intervention support tasks, or other specialised student/teacher support roles (e.g. enrolled nurses performing the role as described in schedule 3). These roles require specific qualifications and/or training, including roles where further training must be undertaken from time to time. The role is for a specific purpose, for which there will be direct accountability as opposed to support roles that are carried out by a range of staff performing routine tasks under direction.
  • Technical tasks that require a sound knowledge of basic technical and/or scientific principles that are used to develop and adapt work methods and make judgements where there are clear guidelines and limited options. Routine technical support in libraries, science, and information technology would be typical examples.

An education support class position at this range commencing at the base will initially be limited to undertaking routine tasks that are carried out under close supervision and direction. Work that carries some degree of independence will generally involve a limited number of tasks performed on a regular basis where priorities are clear, procedures are well established, and direction is readily available. Subject to any specific qualification and/or training requirement, an education support class employee employed in this range may be progressively required to undertake coordination, specialised student/teacher support tasks, or technical tasks as experience in the role is gained.

Responsibilities
  • Active supervision of primary school aged children.
  • Liaise with and provide information to parents, staff and students about school administration procedures and policy.
  • Provide a document preparation service for the school community.
  • Coordinate the distribution of School newsletters, circulars and other documentation to be provided to the school community.
  • Provide administrative support for specific school programs.
  • Liaise with service providers, welfare agencies and relevant organisations to facilitate student referral.
  • Develop and adapt work methods and organise systems of classification, maintenance and ordering in a school resource centre.
Who May Apply

Individuals with the aptitude, experience and/or qualifications to fulfil the specific requirements of the position.

Applicants are to have a current Working With Children Check  "Employee" card

Preference will be given to applicants with approved First Aid, Anaphylaxis and Asthma Management qualifications eg HLTAID012

Qualifications may include completed or currently enrolled in:

  • Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care / Diploma of Children's Services (Outside School Hours Care).
  • Teaching qualification
