About the Barwon Early Parenting Centre
Opening in the first half of 2024, the Barwon Early Parenting Centre will provide specialist support and deliver flexible, targeted services for families with children 0–4 years old.
The centre aims to enhance the parent-child relationship and support parents with strategies for achieving their parenting goals. These goals are often in areas such as sleep and settling, child behaviour, and parent and child health and wellbeing.
These goals are achieved through structured programs that vary from residential, day stay and in-home support. Programs include:
- psychosocial, physical and developmental assessments
- parenting education
- counselling
- skills development
- play-based activities
- modelling effective behaviours.
The Barwon Early Parenting Centre is located within the McKellar Centre precinct on Ballarat Road in North Geelong.

About the role
The Play Therapist assumes a vital role within the clinical team, serving as a frontline caregiver dedicated to nurturing healthy parent-child dynamics. Their primary objective is to empowering parents with the tools and techniques necessary to care for their young ones with sensitivity and warmth, while also championing the importance of play and orchestrating engaging play sessions.
In collaboration with the team, this role delivers invaluable parenting education and aids families in achieving their developmental goals. Each intervention is grounded in the significance of parent-child attachment, recognizing its profound impact on fostering secure relationships vital for the lifelong well-being of children.
At the Early Parenting Centre, the Play Therapist crafts an environment that is both supportive and safe, fostering a sense of belonging for children and their parents alike. They lead various programs aimed at enriching the parent-child bond through play, meticulously planning and executing age-appropriate activities while actively encouraging parental participation and involvement.
