The Principal Engineer role is a key position within a program of work. You will sit at the centre of technical activities: thinking about upcoming initiatives, making sure our systems are fit for purpose, helping squads solve technical problems, and improving our developer experience, coding, infrastructure and DevOps. You also won’t be afraid to roll up your sleeves and dive in for some hands-on coding when it’s required.

Key Responsibilities:
- Develop a strong working understanding of the business and how our systems create value
- Lead architecture and technical decisions, analyse business needs, and guide stakeholders and teams
- Take ownership of work and responsibility for getting it done; this is more than coding - it involves working through problems, communication, discussion, and exploration
- Design technical solutions with the understanding of work priority, trading off perfection and delivery according to context
- Identify risks, issues and improvement opportunities and ensure they are escalated as necessary
- Mentor software engineers and lead pair programming and peer review exercises
- Assist the Program Manager with prioritisation and facilitating a steady stream of work
- Support recruitment for new Software Engineer roles
- Ensure the systems we deliver are fit for purpose
- Participate in DevOps support, production support and incident management
Preferred Experience/ Qualifications:
- 8+ years of commercial software development
- Substantial production experience with C# and .NET Core
- Strong working knowledge of databases:
o relational databases and ORM technologies (e.g. Azure SQL Server, Entity Framework)
o document databases (e.g. Cosmos DB) - Ability to express intent through code, focusing on simplicity and maintainability
- Skilled at troubleshooting and debugging issues and identifying root causes
- Awareness of important security, performance, and accessibility issues
- Expertise in problem-solving, navigating solutions that balance business value, technical feasibility and cost
- Proven capacity to mentor and guide developers in producing quality code for the context
