The Opportunity
This position will lead a multi-disciplinary team that provides a range of environmental services to the community and Council, ensuring that activities are coordinated within the branch and across Council.
The successful applicant will coordinate the development of Council's environmental policies, initiatives and programs that will lead to improved environmental outcomes for Noosa Shire.
The position will provide high level advice on Commonwealth, State and Local Government legislation, policy and plans and environmental matters to members of the Branch, other areas of Council and Council's external customers.
Further, the incumbent will assist the Environmental Services Manager to develop, implement and encourage a performance focused, team-orientated, constructive culture by providing leadership, support and guidance to all Branch team members.

As the Principal Environment Officer, you will have comprehensive knowledge of Commonwealth and State planning principles and environmental legislation including the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, Vegetation Management Act, Nature Conservation Act, Environment Protection (Water) Policy and the ability to accurately interpret legislation.
You will have a proven track record of success as a senior team member working on environmental matters, including extensive experience with environmental planning and policy and natural resource management.
The position's focus will be:
- Manage the Environmental Planning and Policy Team by providing leadership, support and guidance to create a positive work culture.
- Provide expert advice and problem solving on environmental matters governed by a range of legal frameworks, the planning scheme, applicable local laws and policies on environmental matters to elected representatives, internal officers and the general public.
- Contribute to the assessment process for the development and implementation of Council's Community Grants Program relevant to the environment category of the program.
- Contribute to and develop environmental codes and policy for integration within the planning scheme, consistent with State and Commonwealth Government policy.
- Coordinate, develop and review Council's environmental initiatives and programs, ensuring an integrated approach and best practice delivery that meets the outcomes of the Environment Strategy.
- Conduct and facilitate negotiations with the State Government, regional natural resource management organisations and community groups in relation to environmental matters and special projects to enhance and protect environmental values.
- Prepare high quality reports to Council providing recommendations on complex and key environmental management issues.
- Promote ecological principles within Council and contribute to Council's commitment to natural resource management and environment planning initiatives.
- Lead and participate in technical working groups and steering committees, and review discussion papers, reports and studies.
- Engage with and provide advice to key stakeholders including the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation and environmental community groups.
- Represent Council at Government and community forums to support regional and local environmental and conservation objectives.
- Develop and implement regular performance standards for team members, to ensure clear position expectations are set and communicated, and team goals are understood and aligned to personal development plans.
- Manage allocated physical, human, and financial resources to deliver cost effective services within the adopted budget parameters.
- Such other relevant duties as required from time to time which would generally fall within the scope of this position.
