- Assist the Ombudsman and Health Complaints Commissioner in the corporate management of the Office, including strategic planning, resource management, staff development and the preparation of Annual Reports to Parliament.
- Direct the conduct of the investigation and complaints management program to ensure that key output objectives are met; including overseeing and guiding the work of individual investigation and assessment officers and conciliators, monitoring their workload and performance in relation to agreed benchmarks, deploying resources within the unit as appropriate, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, and identifying the need for the formal investigations.
- Conduct complex and/or sensitive investigations under the Health Complaints Act 1995, including the preparation of major reports and the formulation of evidence-based recommendations.
- Conciliate complaints, particularly those raising issues of a more complex and sensitive nature.
- Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of Office policies and procedures, and to staff training and development.
- Act for the Commissioner as required and represent him or her as required in local and national settings.
- Other duties as may be required to assist in the management and operational planning of the Office.
