Product Management roles can often be delivery roles disguised as “product”. Limited scope, limited influence, and not in the conversation early enough.
This is a Product Management gig with accountability on the what and why, then leading squads on the how.
I don’t think I’m being dramatic when I say this role is just ~stunning~. Let’s go into some depth as to why and what I’m talking about, but first…
Who is the gig with?
PlayHQ Sports.
What can you tell me about them?
So much.
Culture? From what I’ve seen - highly collaborative. Very supportive. Damn smart people.
Families, sport, and life comes first. They work hybridly, collaborating in their Melbourne office, usually once a week or fortnight, whatever suits you & your team's life + needs best.
This is a team that supports peers in delivery, with work/life balance and flexibility at the very heart of it, but who are also big on acknowledging that help/support and celebrating the wins.
This is a high growth business that believes in their mission to connect more people through sport. From a national level to grass roots/local communities.
This is an organisation that has had customer experience at the forefront of what they do and the decisions they make. Now it’s time to really grow and scale the business.
OK, what about the gig?
This is a role that will be leading the B2C Mobile squad. You will be accountable for managing existing apps, such as Play AFL, NetballHQ and MyHoops, as well as being a leader in the business on research and creating/building new apps across different sports.
You are a key decision maker for this squad. Making decisions and influencing/managing up on what to prioritise and why. Being able to spot opportunities, as well as problems, and bringing it back to customer value and commercial value for the business, and then being able to lead Engineering in delivery.
Measurements of success? You will ultimately be accountable for user growth, engagement and retention across mobile apps.
So… who do I need to be?
Firstly, you need to have a real interest in sport. A business motivated in connecting more people, in communities through greater participation in sport is what they’re all about. You need to have a genuine connection or interest in this.
You’ve worked in a similar environment. Earlier-stage tech/product led businesses that are about to really scale. Familiar with the pace, ambiguity and how fluid it can be.
You need to have B2C experience as a (dare I say it) end-to-end Product Manager. Be able to balance strategy as well as tactical components. Connecting with customers and really understanding them.
Influencing outcomes. Be able to lead Engineering, influence and support cross-functionally and manage up to C-suite.
Be a force to transition into a Product-led business. Comfortable with the complexities of the customer base, intimate knowledge of problems and opportunities in order to prioritise and make decisions.
It would also be advantageous to have mobile experience, but it’s not essential.
If this sounds like you, or you are intrigued and want to find out more? Apply and say hi!
