Program Manager - DeadlyScience

Job Description

An excellent opportunity is available for a Program Manager for the DeadlyScience Pathways Program at Australia’s pre-eminent medical research institute. This role would suit an innovative and passionate person who wants to make a difference.

Our Indigenous Employment Strategy has a strong focus on building the pipeline of the next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander scientists and a commitment to work collaboratively with key partners, including in the community and education sectors, on mutually beneficial goals.

This position is responsible for managing and implementing the exciting partnership between WEHI and DeadlyScience, building on the strong foundations of the pilot of the program. The partnership aims to inspire young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s interest in science and deliver innovative education activities to schools and communities across Australia.

A key focus for this position is to manage the partnership program, collaborating with key stakeholders at WEHI and DeadlyScience. The role oversees implementation and management of the program within agreed timelines and budgets. This person will also work collaboratively with WEHI internal stakeholders including the Diversity and Inclusion and Communications and Marketing teams to deliver on WEHI’s reconciliation and Indigenous employment and education commitments.

Most importantly, the person in this role will demonstrate a passion to make a difference to communities, providing critical support to DeadlyScience to enable access to STEM resources and science-based education programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait students across Australia.

Terms of appointment

This position is available for 1 year in the first instance, with a view to extending the role to align with program implementation timelines. WEHI and DeadlyScience are very open to structuring this role for the right candidate which may include part time, full time or job sharing.

The filling of this position is intended to constitute a special/equal opportunity measure under section 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth), and section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 and section 8(4) of the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006. The position is open to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicants although WEHI may consider applicants from other backgrounds in the case of a job share or part time arrangement.

Salary is PSE 8 ($110,249 - $119,330). Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.

Selection Criteria

Knowledge and skills

  • Established relationships with First Nations communities.

  • Demonstrated experience working in/with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education settings.

  • Project management skills and the ability to work with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.

  • Operational skills to oversee delivery of the program.

Personal qualities

  • Demonstrable personal commitment to working towards equity and justice for First Nations people.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to communicate sensitively and respectfully with a range of internal and external stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.

  • An inclusive work style that supports a cooperative culture throughout WEHI and that promotes collaboration with the external stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Education or community development qualification highly desirable or equivalent alternate combination of knowledge, training and/or experience.

  • Project management methodology qualification highly desirable or equivalent alternate combination of knowledge, training and/or experience. This includes willingness to take part in formal training if successful in the role.

  • A current Victorian Working with Children Check

Location

WEHI is located in Parkville, Victoria however this role would be suitable to be performed interstate with travel to Melbourne as required.
