Overview:

We are looking for a people-focussed Project Accountant who understands that achieving excellent results comes not only through applying your project accounting expertise, but also through engaging and supporting your various stakeholder groups.

This role is with a leading University client and offers the opportunity to contribute to the development of an organisational approach to the financial management of projects and portfolios by delivering robust project reporting and accounting.

In this role you will be working closely with the assigned Portfolio Financial Analysts, and a broad group of stakeholders, undertaking core project accounting activities to ensure efficient financial management throughout the project lifecycle. This will include project lifecycle reporting, enterprise financial reporting, support of the University Investment Process (UIP), along with project, program and portfolio support in budgeting, forecasting and financial governance.

Who you will be supporting?

  • Support Program Directors, Program Managers, and the broader project community by developing and refining financial practices for improved financial oversite (reporting and governance) throughout the project, program, and portfolio lifecycles,
  • Collaborate with finance operations teams to manage CWIP (Capital Work in Progress) and facilitate fixed asset register transfers,
  • Support the enhancement and optimisation of processes related to financial aspects across programs and projects, in support of the Portfolio Financial Analysts.


How will you do this?

  • Drive the establishment and maintenance of comprehensive financial controls within the project portfolio.
  • Provide guidance in project financial governance and best practice,
  • Coordinate and assist with month-end tasks, including processing of journals and inter-departmental transfers and associated documentation,
  • Review monthly and quarterly financial performance of Portfolio/Program/Projects by tracking actual expenditure to budget and variance analysis.
  • Prepare project financial acquittals in accordance with funding body terms and conditions, with assistance and guidance from the Portfolio Financial Analyst.
  • Utilise your expertise to advise and assist stakeholders with monthly forecasts.
  • Assist with annual budget cycle, with inputs from project financials.
  • Manage or assist in the management of project financial audits, as required,
  • Assist in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of University's Enterprise Project Management System (EPMS), including accuracy of data and project record management.
  • Triage and management of ad-hoc financial queries and tasks as required,
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of processes for the organisation and align activities for continued strategic growth of organisation.


What you will need:

  • A tertiary qualification (Accounting, Finance, or a related field) with relevant experience in a project finance or accounting role, or a combination of relevant professional experience and education / training. Certification (e.g. CPA, CA) will be highly regarded,
  • Strong project accounting experience, preferably in construction and / or technology; including planning, budgeting, analysis, and reporting, with proven experience in managing financials for large-scale portfolios of programs and projects,
  • Proficiency in budgeting, forecasting, and reporting actuals in alignment with project requirements and accounting standards,
  • Knowledge of CWIP management, capitalisation and transferring to fixed asset registers,
  • Advanced Excel skillset, ideally coupled with reporting and analytics tools (e.g. Tableau, Power BI) and Workday experience is advantageous,
  • Familiarity with EPMO and corporate portfolio management environments and an understanding of project management methodologies (Waterfall, Iterative, Agile) and associated tools,
  • Previous experience in developing and improving project financial management practices,
  • Ability to work independently and to respond to both set tasks and ad hoc requests quickly, logically and with a clear sense of priority,
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with an ability to work effectively in a team environment and across all levels of the business (multi-disciplinary),
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, especially in conveying financial information and requirements in simple language to people with a non-finance background,
  • A desire to learn, with a can-do attitude,
  • Prior experience within the Property / Construction industry would be beneficial.
