The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is seeking to fill several Project/Program Manager roles across the ABS’ Data Sourcing Division.
Depending on the role, the successful applicants can work out of our offices in Belconnen (Canberra), Geelong, Adelaide, Docklands (Melbourne), Brisbane, Sydney and Hobart, although flexible working arrangements (including a hybrid model of working from home and the office) apply.

The Data Sourcing Division is responsible for sourcing the data needed to produce independent and reliable information on a wide range of social, environmental and economic matters. We aim to provide a seamless, digital first approach to data provision which meets the needs and expectations of our individual, household, business and government providers.
About the role
As a Project/Program Manager in the Data Sourcing Division, you would:
- Enjoy leading small, multi-disciplinary teams to deliver excellent results.

- Value empowering colleagues to problem solve project issues to leverage diversity within multi-disciplinary teams to deliver innovative solutions.

- Be passionate when championing better practice and process improvement initiatives to deliver efficiencies and improved levels of project predictability and a great workplace.
Responsibilities of Project/Program Managers in the Data Sourcing Division include:
- Using program management frameworks and principles to lead and support projects and programs.
- Supporting the shaping and maturing of best practice, including agile, kanban or waterfall project management methodologies.
- Expertise in leading teams in the effective use of contemporary tools including Jira, MS Project and the broader suite of MS applications.
- Ability to mentor and coach staff to develop individual capabilities and organisational responsiveness.
- Leading project delivery through establishing plans, managing scope, mitigating risks and coordinating resourcing (people and financial).
- Effectively engage and manage a diverse range of stakeholders across technical and non-technical areas.
What we are looking for (selection criteria)
We are looking for passionate and experienced Project/Program Managers to support the delivery of ABS’ data sourcing operations as well as the development and uplift of ABS’ data sourcing solutions.
To be suitable you should have most or all of the following skills, qualities and experience:
- Develop strategies and plans which enable teams to deliver upon agreed outcomes.
- Coach, mentor and support team members across co-located and distributed environments.
- Influence stakeholders through creating and maintaining robust relationships and negotiating mutually beneficial outcomes.
- Identification and delivery of defined project business benefits and identification and mitigation of emerging issues/risks.
- Across project and portfolio spans of control, development of project proposals, plans and status reports.
- Development of project cost models and management of project resources.
- Qualifications/certifications in project management disciplines and methodologies will be highly regarded.
