Job description

The Regional Waste Coordinator plays a key role in managing waste services, ensuring environmental sustainability, and achieving regulatory compliance within Maranoa Regional Council. This position is responsible for coordinating waste facilities, environmental projects, and contracts while leading policy development and public education programs. Additionally, the Regional Waste Coordinator oversees Weighbridge operations for accuracy and compliance, ensuring efficient waste management practices align with environmental standards and legal requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and diversify waste services, including landfills, transfer stations, and kerbside collections.
  • Manage waste contracts, and engineering projects associated with landfills
  • Coordinate environmental and sustainability projects, climate change initiatives, and other programs.
  • Ensure high levels of regulatory compliance in waste operations, including EPA requirements.
  • Assist in reducing ‘waste to landfill’ within Council’s operations
  • Oversee and ensure accurate Weighbridge operations.
  • Coordinate Weighbridge activities in compliance with regulatory standards
  • Develop and deliver proactive education programs for environment, health, and waste outcomes.
  • Partner with stakeholders and agencies to improve waste reduction and recycling awareness.
  • Undertake projects contributing to the improvement of waste management functions.
  • Implement strategies for continual improvement in waste management practices.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Project management experience in engineering and construction, handling complex projects in a regulatory environment.
  • Sound understanding of environmental and waste management principles.
  • Ability to deliver projects on time and within budget, with financial planning expertise.
  • Strong negotiation skills with regulatory authorities for legislative compliance.
  • Proficiency in strategic planning for waste facilities and landfills.
  • Experience in developing project plans, environmental management plans, and policies.
  • Excellent oral and written communication abilities for stakeholder engagement and team coordination.
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience in noise management including noise theory, measurement, and management.
  • Demonstrated understanding of asbestos management practices.
  • Ability to engage with the community through creative and innovative initiatives.
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, accuracy of information, and attention to detail, with the ability to prepare clear and concise reports and provide well-considered and informed recommendations.
  • Excellent time management and planning skills demonstrated by managing own time, organising workloads, and setting priorities.
  • Ability to plan, cost, and schedule works to meet agreed service delivery requirements, standards, budgets, and timeframes.
  • Ability to work autonomously and cooperatively in a team environment across Council and the broader community.

Qualifications and Licences:

To be successful you will need to demonstrate that you meet (*or have the ability to obtain within three months) the below mandatory requirements for the role:

  • Current C (Car) Class Driver Licence
  • Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science, Civil or Environmental Engineering or an associated discipline
  • relevant to the responsibilities of the position, or
  • Experience in the following areas: Environment and sustainability, landfill and waste management, landfill designand engineering, liaison and/or education.
  • Relevant project management experience
  • General Construction Industry (White Card) *
  • Hepatitis B Vaccination

Although not mandatory, the below qualifications and licences are considered beneficial to the role:

  • Experience and familiarity with the interpretation and application of relevant legislation and regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience in team development and establishing work programs.
  • Familiarity with software related to engineering and landfill management.
  • Q Fever Vaccination / Testing *
  • Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV-Rabies) Vaccination *
  • Authorised Person *
