DAHS is seeking a dedicated professional who is registered with AHPRA as a Registered Nurse. This position is required to deliver a comprehensive School Health service including health and development assessments for school-aged children.

- Derby Aboriginal Health Service (DAHS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service (ACCHS) providing holistic primary health care services to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Derby and surrounding communities
- DAHS provide a wide range of innovative public health programs in addition to direct comprehensive primary health care services
- This position is required to deliver a comprehensive School Health service including health and development assessments for school-aged children in the Gibb River Road and Jarlmadangah Burru communities
- The role works with the school staff, wider school community and parents to identify and address the health issues for students in the community schools
- A key factor is the ability to engage with the community members and support parents in improving identified health needs of the children
- This position is required to work as part of the DAHS team in providing a quality and client focused environment
- Full Time Role
- Working with school staff to identify priority health issues and strategies to address issues
- Developing and implementing programs to enhance the health and wellbeing of children 4 to 17 years of age
- Provide school entry assessments for all children commencing school for the first time
- Perform Medicare benefits schedule items for health checks (715), GP management plans (721,723) for children 4 to17 years of age
- Provide education to clients in disease prevention, management of health conditions and treatment requirements
- Work within your level of professional competency and seek advice and clinical guidance from senior clinical staff as required
- Be prepared to share your clinical knowledge and expertise with other staff members
- Follow DAHS clinical policies and procedures
- Participate in the development, presentation, evaluation and written reports of health programs and services
- Participate in ongoing training by DAHS and other agencies as required
- Promote DAHS service areas: Sexual Health, Maternal and Child Health, Women’s Health and the SEWB services to clients and initiate referrals
- Be accountable for the safe, efficient and effective use of resources, including assisting with forwards planning for DAHS
- Work with external agencies to deliver best practice client care including: Community Health, Mental Health, Department of Child Protection and Hospital Services
- Assist in client follow up and liaise with other agencies when necessary
- Liaise with the Specialist Clerk to organise referrals to specialist and allied health clinics
- Maintain a clean and hygienic environment in the clinic and participate in maintaining, restocking, calibrating and replacing clinic stores and equipment
- Work within the parameters of DAHS OHS policies and procedures including Infection Control, Emergency Evacuation, Outreach and Remote Visits and reporting of Incidents, Accident and Near Misses (and Hazards)
- Provide day to day health service activities to the designated communities within the context of Primary Health Care in a professional, confidential and culturally safe manner
- Follow the policies and procedures stored on the DAHS LogiQC and practice in accordance with guidelines standards, code of ethics/conduct and statutory and legislative requirements
- Commit to the philosophy and practice of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation
- Assist fellow staff members with information about community, culture and language that is relevant to client care, and for appropriate behaviours and respect of culture
- Actively participate in quality audits, quality improvement and accreditation activities including exercising initiative in making improvements to work processes
- Participate in professional appraisals activities and supervision as required
- Undertake multi-functional duties, relevant to position; as directed by Senior Management
- Report directly to your line manager in regards to all work issues including any matters which may have possible legal implications
- Liaise with other government and non-government agencies to achieve equitable outcomes for school aged children and their families
- Work as a member of the DAHS team with staff from all areas: Medical Reception, Administration, SEWB, Clinic, Maternal and Child Health and Senior Management
- Use problem-solving strategies to ensure an effective and efficient service
- Actively participate in training, up skilling and educational activities, as directed, including but not limited to in-services, clinical competencies and induction
- Individuals are responsible for identifying and initiating their own professional development
- Actively participate, as directed, in internal and external meetings
- Maintain statistics, administrative records and client documents as per DAHS policies and procedures
- Produce reports for DAHS as required
- Ensure maintenance of equipment, including IT equipment, vehicles and phones. • Advise line manager regarding equipment/resources requirements
- Perform office duties including, but not limited to, photocopying, faxing, laminating and processing paperwork

- Personally demonstrate through consistent behaviour understanding of, respect for and compliance with culturally sensitive ways of working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, staff and communities

- You’ll have appropriate skills and experience in the delivery of comprehensive primary health care within the organisation and School Health service to include health and development assessments for school-aged children in the Gibb River Road and Jarlmadangah Burru communities
- Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulatory Authority – (AHPRA) as a Registered Nurse with at least 2 years post graduate nursing experience
- Practice within clinical standards and quality of care, which is effective, efficient and in accordance with best practice and agreed standards and policies
- Competent in planning and delivering health promotion initiatives
- Knowledge and understanding of the issues pertaining to the health of Aboriginal people in rural and remote areas
- Competent in conducting holistic health and development assessments
- Demonstrate knowledge of the Medicare Benefits Schedule
- Well-developed communication, negotiation and problem solving skills
- Demonstrated written and computing skills
- Demonstrate incorporation of quality and risk management within practice
- Have the ability to function as a team member and the capacity to work without supervision
- Hold a current Immunisation Certificate
- Demonstrated knowledge, competence and attitudes required to provide Primary Health Care nursing within a patient centred and culturally appropriate approach to care
- Knowledge and understanding of the issues faces by Aboriginal people in rural and remote areas and the impact they have on health and wellbeing
- Are able to work for short periods under extreme weather conditions when on outreach and community visits
- Experience in child or school community health nursing
- Competent to conduct School Entry Health Assessments and Adolescent Psychosocial Assessments (HEADSS)
- Competent in ear health assessment and treatment
- Trained in Mental Health First Aid
- Competent in providing sexual health and relationship education and care for children and adolescents
- Knowledge of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations
