The Institute for Respiratory Health (Inc) is a not-for-profit medical research institute, carrying out scientific and clinical research into the treatment and management of lung disease such as asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer, mesothelioma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis. Our Mission is that we bring together world-class researchers to develop new ideas, treatments and better health outcomes for people living with respiratory disease.
Position Purpose
The Tissue Repair and Fibrosis Research Group is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Research Assistant to join the team. The overall research focus of the group is on understanding the cell-mediated and molecular mechanisms driving fibrosis across different tissues and organs and in identifying novel therapeutic approaches. The successful candidate will join the team to investigate the novel approaches for the treatment of intracochlear fibrosis. These studies will build on an established program of research and will involve the analysis of mammalian cells and tissues as well as an animal model of cochlear implant-induced fibrosis. A/Prof Prêle and her team are based within the Institute for Respiratory Health Laboratory which is located in the purpose-built Harry Perkins Research building, situated on the QEII medical health campus in Nedlands. Role statement
As the appointee you will, under general direction, provide support and assistance to researchers and undertake experiment and research activities.
Key Responsibilities / Duties
Assist with experimental design, execution and data analysis.
Careful and accurate documentation of experimental procedures and outcomes.
Assist with the development and implementation of laboratory techniques.
Collect and prepare materials for research experiments.
Conduct background research including reading biomedical literature as required.
Assist with routine laboratory duties including but not limited to ordering, maintenance of laboratory protocols, and the preparation of SOPs and risk assessments.
Assist the preparation of data for manuscripts and grant submissions.
Assist in the training of students and other research staff as required.
Actively participate in laboratory and institute meetings and support the Institute in pursuing its objectives.
Other duties as required.
Selection Criteria
The successful candidate will possess the following key attributes:
Essential
BSc (Hons) in biomedical science or a related discipline.
Competency in a range of computing skills including word processing, spreadsheets, databases internet and email.
Demonstrated experience in cellular and molecular biology approaches such as real time PCR, western blot, mammalian cell culture, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays etc.
Experience in the use of image analysis platforms such as confocal laser scanning microscopy.
Highly developed organisation skills with the demonstrated ability to manage data and meet deadlines.
Demonstrated commitment to upskilling in experimental procedures and data analysis.
Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory health and safety and OGTR regulatory procedures.
Ability to work well with students and staff from differing academic disciplines and cultural backgrounds.
Demonstrated high level of written and oral communication skills in English.
Desirable
Animal handling experience.
Experience using high performance liquid chromatography.
Appointment Prerequisites
Provision of the minimum identity proofing requirements.
Successful Criminal Record Screening Clearance.
Ability to work outside of normal office hours when required.
