Job description

The Garvan Institute of Medical Research brings together world-leading researchers and clinicians, collaborating locally and globally to improve human health. Our mission is to harness all the information encoded in our genome to diagnose better, treat, predict and prevent disease. From individual patients with rare diseases to the many thousands affected by complex, widespread illnesses, we are pioneering discoveries across diseases that have the deepest impact on our community.

THE OPPORTUNITY

We seek a Research Development Manager to join the Translational Genomics Program, reporting to Professor Joseph Powell. The role will support the development of major grant proposals and strategies for the program, working closely with research leaders and external key stakeholders. The program focuses on understanding the impact of human genetic variation on diseases at the level of individual cells and using this information to develop a translational impact on human health. We have developed globally leading single-cell and genomic data cohorts to achieve this in multiple cell systems (immune, stem cells, lung, and cancers). By analysing this data, in conjunction with other experimental validation, we develop companion tests to inform therapy-choice and, excitingly, identify cell-specific novel therapeutic targets.

SNAPSHOT OF BENEFITS

  • 2 year term contract
  • Generous salary packaging to save you income tax on your wages thereby boosting your monthly take home pay (max. $15,900 general expenses + $2,650 meals/accom)
  • Ample opportunities for on-going training and development
  • Stimulating, diverse and highly international research environment
  • Flexible work arrangements e.g. start / finish times
  • 18 weeks paid parental leave for both parents including paid superannuation
  • A range of additional leave types to meet your personal needs including cultural leave, conference leave, community service and study leave
  • Discounted Health Insurance
  • Lifestyle discounts with our community partners

WHAT YOU WILL DO

The incumbent Research Development Manager will work with members of research teams to support activities across the following areas:

  • Lead strategic grant initiatives to support the Translational Genomics strategy.
  • Demonstrated success with MRFF, state and national government schemes to prepare and coordinate grant applications in relevant areas (e.g. genomics health futures mission, stem cells therapies mission, national critical research infrastructure), including liaising with all research team investigators, participating institutions, clinicians, and other national and international stakeholders regarding requirements and compliance, based on an extensive understanding of grant rules within the NHMRC and other relevant grant bodies.
  • Support grant submissions to international funding bodies such as NIH, CZI, EU Horizon schemes and UK schemes to expand the funding strategy of CGFI to international opportunities.
  • Lead the development of material and pitches to philanthropy and VC stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders from UNSW, the Garvan Institute and key national and international collaborators to manage the grant submission process and act as the first point of contact for queries and requests.
  • Oversee and manage the delivery of Translational Genomics grants and support business development initiatives to achieve operational and strategic goals.
  • Manage project dependencies, risks, issues, change requests and financials and work with the project team to ensure appropriate arrangements.
  • Manage compliance to Garvan/UNSW governance pathways to ensure projects are managed within a defined, consistent, and proven set of project development and implementation rules.
  • Partner with the Research Team and key stakeholders to monitor and report on the progress of projects while identifying problems and proposing practical solutions.
  • Support the Program Director and Researcher Managers in the strategic and daily operations of the Program.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the Garvan Code of Conduct
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of Institute and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact the health & safety of yourself or others.

ABOUT YOU

A strong background in computational genomics, bioinformatics or data science is preferred. Highly motivated individuals with a strong attention to detail, multi-tasking skills, and a willingness to learn new technologies are also encouraged to apply.

  • Tertiary qualification in a scientific field with subsequent experience in grants management and delivery or equivalent competence gained through a combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Minimum 2 years relevant experience
  • Proven grants success, with an in-depth understanding of the grant application processes internationally and in Australia and a demonstrated capacity to provide expert advice.
  • Genomics grants experience across multiple sectors, including university, government, clinical, and research settings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and involvement in submitting national and international grant applications (e.g., ARC, CZI, Horizon Europe, MRFF, NHMRC, NIH and other key international medical research funders).
  • Knowledge of budgeting and resource allocation procedures for the granting bodies and how this relates to multiple institutes/entities, particularly in grant application processes.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced and an ability to effectively 'tell the story of cellular genomics' to a varied audience.
  • Demonstrated success working effectively and collaboratively on initiatives with a range of people at various levels within an organisation.
  • Excellent time management skills, demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines using judgment and initiative.
  • The ability to interpret and implement organisational policy.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
