About the Role
The Metabolomics Australia facility (MA) at the University of Melbourne (UoM) is looking for a highly motivated bioinformatician/ biostatistician with an interest in mass spectrometry-based metabolomics to join the team. The appointee will work across the Metabolomics Australia team and interact closely with researchers who access the facility.
They will be responsible for developing, adapting, and maintaining streamlined bioinformatics tools/workflows (existing and new) as well as the application of these automated bioinformatics workflows to client projects to facilitate high quality delivery of metabolomics services. They will report directly to the Metabolomics Australia Facility Manager, and work closely with the Bioinformatics Team Lead and other staff in the Metabolomics Australia facility.
The successful incumbents will be involved in ensuring the efficient use of resources, identifying future capability requirements, and will be proactive in expanding the capability of the facility.
Responsibilities include:
  • Contribute towards the research effort of the team and to develop your research expertise with an increasing degree of autonomy
  • Provide expertise and metabolomics services to UoM and external users of the UoM MA facility
  • Contribute to the deployment and/or development of bioinformatic tools for metabolomics workflows and analysis
  • Contribute to the development of bioinformatic, statistical and data processing tools that underpin metabolomics analyses as identified through engagement with MA-UoM analytical teams and staff and to provide feedback to MA management around improving functionalities and features
  • Develop training materials for optimized bioinformatics workflows and deliver appropriate and timely training to MA staff, clients (internal and external) and students, as directed by Facility Manager
  • Contribute to data management and storage at MA through engagement with key stakeholders
  • Contribute to maintenance and development of cloud computing solutions
About You
To be successful in this role, you possess a degree or demonstrate experience in bioinformatics, biostatistics or a related discipline. You will have demonstrated knowledge and understanding of bioinformatics methods and workflows, data analyses, data management and analysis platforms across specialist areas. Additionally, you will have strong skills in scripting and tool wrapping in R and/or Python.
You will have demonstrated ability to undertake independent research and to complete and deliver internationally competitive research, as evidenced by publications in high impact, peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to work with researchers of diverse backgrounds is essential, as well as the ability to actively contribute to the team, work harmoniously in a team environment and demonstrated flexibility to adapting to team priorities. You will have demonstrated ability to provide guidance, training and direction to research staff and students.
Specific expertise in advanced metabolomics bioinformatics and/or biostatistics techniques, as well as demonstrated leadership skills in Project Management would be highly desirable.
You will also have:
  • Degree in a relevant discipline, such as, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, data analytics or equivalent industry experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of bioinformatics methods and workflows, data analyses, data management and analysis platforms across specialist areas
  • Demonstrated ability in scripting and tool wrapping in R and/or Python. Experience in other programming languages would be advantageous
  • Ability to deliver a quality service and manage bioinformatics resources
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective client relationships
