Located on Gadigal and Bidjigal land (Randwick NSW), Black Dog Institute is the only Medical Research Institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan, our aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone. The Role
The purpose of this position is to provide research management and coordination across research and research operations. The position works collaboratively with Research Leaders and Team Leaders to manage the research operations that support the activities of the Research Directorate, including post-award support, planning and reporting, and information management. It is responsible for co-developing, implementing and managing the research capacity building program which includes career development, progression and mentoring, supporting research networks and collaborations, in line with the broader Black Dog research governance and management frameworks.
Duties & Responsibilities
• Provide effective and efficient post-award funding support
• Manage the relationship with the UNSW Research Grants & Contracts Office for post-award funding management.
• Provide effective and efficient Research Support and management to Research Heads and Team Leaders, including the development of their operational plans, resource plans and budgets.
• Provide operational support to the Research Directorate, including coordination of research meetings, Horizons Seminars, capacity building programs, and other support for committees and working groups as relevant.
• Lead the development and maintenance of research information systems, including the Research Guide, Intranet, and Research Orientation
• Support the accurate and timely reporting of the Institute’s research infrastructure program and other major research reporting requirements.
• Support the implementation of the Research Translation Framework.
• Liaise with the People and Culture team and people managers to support the recruitment of new research appointments and employment contract renewals.
• Coordinate the induction of research staff, students and visitors including collaborating with the People and Culture team to ensure new research staff are across relevant frameworks and governance requirements.
• Collaborate with the People and Culture team to champion and support the delivery of career development and mentoring for professional and academic research staff.
• In liaison with internal stakeholders support the recognition and reward of academic excellence and knowledge translation in research, including external award nominations
• Facilitate and promote communication and manage relations between research and other areas of the Institute.
• Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications Directorate in relation to marketing and communication activities and events
• Provide regular updates to internal stakeholders on research development and support initiatives
• Management of 2 direct reports and day-to-day activities in the delivery of projects to achieve the operational plan.
• Lead continuous improvement and quality assurance processes across all relevant project activities systems and processes
Selection Criteria
1. A relevant tertiary qualification with substantial subsequent experience or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination or education, training and/or experience.
2. Experience in a research environment that is consistent with the mission and objectives of Black Dog Institute, with a good understanding of the broader research context.
3. Experience in the delivery of research development activities, including workshops, seminars, career development programs and information sessions.
4. Proven experience in preparation of milestone reporting, impact and annual reports.
5. Strong organisational skills and the demonstrated ability to influence people and manage workflows, and to prioritise and meet deadlines.
6. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work.
7. High level writing and documentation skills including extensive experience and/or understanding of research grants.
