The Pilbara school psychology service is seeking to recruit a highly motivated and committed School Psychologist to deliver psychological services and support to schools in and around the regions district hub, Port Hedland. The successful applicant will make up a team of five psychologists in Hedland, and will join a collaborative, dynamic, and vibrant team of 19 psychologists across the Pilbara.

School Psychologists working in the Hedland network in 2024 receive an Attraction and Retention Incentive (ARI) of $10,210 per year, to be adjusted pro rata for FTE.

An additional locality allowance of $3 976 per year is also included.

About the role

The successful applicant will join a motivated, supportive and collaborative team of psychologists across the Pilbara. As a School Psychologist you will operate as a key member of your school community, as well as the broader network and regional school psychology teams to support the wellbeing of students, and to maximise educational outcomes. You will provide specialist psychological assessment, diagnosis, and evidence-based intervention, as well as providing consultation at the individual, group, whole school, and system level. Services will be provided in the areas of mental health and wellbeing, behaviour support and intervention, learning and motivation, critical incident management, and risk assessment.

The successful applicant will have strong organisational, communication and interpersonal skills, be able to be self-directed and work independently, and be able to work effectively with staff, students, parents and the wider community. You will demonstrate a commitment to your own professional growth and development, and possess the ability to work together with the school administration to develop whole school initiatives to enhance the wellbeing of all members of the school community.

Working as a School Psychologist in the Hedland region will provide the opportunity to work at the forefront of psychological practice for aboriginal youth and their families improving outcomes for young Aboriginal people, while developing your cultural psychological knowledge and skills working alongside the Kariyarra and Nyamal people.

  • Salary range of $83,312 - $92,272 (provisional registration), $96,747 - $134,404 (general registration)
  • School psychologist attraction and retention incentive of $10,200 p.a.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  1. Ability to implement school psychology services and programs in an educational environment to maximise student learning outcomes.
  2. Knowledge of the implementation and evaluation of a variety of psychological approaches appropriate for individual, group and system-level intervention.
  3. High level written and oral communication skills, demonstrating the capacity to produce correspondence, reports and case notes, and interview and training (facilitation) skills.
  4. Highly developed interpersonal skills, which demonstrate an ability to function in a self-directed way, and as a member of an interdisciplinary team, working with a range of clients across the lifespan, Department personnel and inter-agency partners across a variety of contexts.
  5. Ability to apply analytical and conceptual skills to issues identification, risk assessment and analysis, intervention and evaluation.

ELIGIBILITY AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Employees will be required to:

  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter.
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement; and
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check if required
  • hold or be eligible for provisional or general registration with the Psychology Board of Australia
