Job description

The Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA) is responsible for supporting a strong credit system for Australia by managing the application of bankruptcy, criminal asset management and personal property securities laws through the delivery of high-quality education, compliance, and enforcement services. 

The Strategy & Government Division manages the production of strategic documents and plays a key role in intelligence and data and analytic functions. The Division leads the agency’s communication and stakeholder engagement functions and other reporting and government services.

The Strategic Communications section drives, influences, and coordinates the external and internal communication and engagement for the agency. The section contributes to the agency’s purpose by developing its brand, communication and engagement strategies and understanding the importance of context and timing and responding to a rapidly changing environment.

The section also manages the agency’s websites, intranet and social media channels including overseeing the governance framework and policies for these platforms. Creating a strong digital presence with clear and accessible information supports informed decisions making for users.

Purpose of the position

As a leader within the Strategic Communications section, you will lead a small team to support the day-to-day operation and continuous improvement of AFSA’s websites by delivering simple, clear and user-optimised digital content. 

You will be responsible for promoting and supporting plain English content development, consistent terminology, tone, and look and feel across AFSA’s websites. You will also enable best practice and alignment to WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards across all AFSA’s websites.

A key part of this role is to also develop and maintain productive internal and external relationships to support best practice in digital communications. Support digital projects and vendor liaison.

To be successful in this role, you will be passionate about improving the digital user experience, from drafting plain English content to information architecture redesign.

Key accountabilities

  • Manage a small team responsible for improving and maintaining AFSA’s websites. 
  • Write, edit and proofread content to promote plain-English principles to aid user understanding and ensure consistent terminology, tone, and look and feel across all AFSA Digital Channels
  • Applying best practice techniques and adhering to WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards, manage all website publishing across AFSA’s websites. 
  • Use data and research to improve AFSA’s online presence through search engine optimisation, navigation and content development/placement strategies. 
  • Draft and structure digital content in a way that demonstrates an understanding of online user behaviour, information architecture and inclusivity. 
  • Manage operational tasks and project schedules for content updates, overall maintenance, user acceptance testing and functionality of AFSA’s websites.
  • Support and build positive relationships with both internal and external stakeholders to encourage a culture of collaboration, teamwork and innovation. 
  • Maintain, develop and adhere to Digital Channels web governance frameworks, standard operating procedures and work instructions.

Work with our digital provider to: 

  • Manage the development, prototyping, testing and documentation of AFSA’s Digital Channels in accordance with the Digital Service Standard. 
  • Manage AFSA’s web environments and code repositories, ensuring they meet all Australian Government website requirements and industry best-practice.  

Manage and support a team by: 

  • Working effectively as part of a small team and promoting effective cross-team interaction and business partnerships. 
  • Planning, organising, and coordinating tasks to achieve agreed milestones.
  • Maintain Agile boards (Kanban) to reflect current task status and ownership.
  • Tracking the status of project tasks from other project team members.
  • Coordinating review and approval of work with relevant stakeholders.
  • Identifying opportunities to enhance team performance in an environment of collaboration, continuous improvement and change.

Qualifications, accreditations and experience

  • Demonstrated experience working in a similar role is essential.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in digital communications, digital design, digital transformation (or other relevant discipline) will be highly regarded.
