About the role

We are seeking a Senior Advisor Environmental Approvals to play a key role in obtaining approvals and to provide advice on obligations under key State and Commonwealth environmental legislation, primarily for our iron ore operations in the first instance, with a focus on significant greenfield development in the East Pilbara.

We have a permanent full-time opportunity within the team; part-time may be considered will be considered for the right candidate - please indicate if you are seeking full-time or part-time (and preferred hours) in your application. This role is a great opportunity for an enthusiastic and proactive individual who possess the ability to manage multiple priority tasks, actively seek solutions to complex challenges, maintain flexibility to adapt to changing business conditions and work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders. Reporting to the Manager Environmental Approvals, you will be responsible for:

  • Project managing environmental impact assessments required for obtaining Environmental Approvals under Part IV of the Environmental Protection Act 1986 and the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
  • Scoping, commissioning and managing environmental surveys and other studies required to progress Environmental Approvals.
  • Commissioning and managing environmental consultants to prepare environmental assessment documentation.
  • Engaging with internal and external stakeholders, including government agencies and Traditional Owner groups, on specific Environmental Approvals.
  • Participating in project specific studies and providing relevant Environmental Approvals advice and inputs.
  • Actively contributing to and collaborating with the Environmental Approvals team to share knowledge and learnings and to provide relevant peer-to-peer support.

What you'll bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team

  • A Tertiary qualification in an environmental discipline or a related field or equivalent industry experience.
  • Extensive experience in and deep understanding of Part IV of the State EP Act and the Commonwealth EBPC Act, particularly as they relate to mining related approvals.
  • The skills to communicate and consult effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent technical writing skills, attention to detail and an ability to interpret and problem solve complex issues.
  • The ability to work effectively in a team environment.

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Experience in project management.
  • Experience in the mining industry more generally.
  • Experience or understanding of GIS software and Microsoft applications

This role will be based in Perth, at Rio Tinto's CBD based offices in Central Park. Ad hoc travel to the East Pilbara will be expected.
