About This Opportunity 

The Artificial Heart Frontiers Program (AHFP), a multi-institution partnership between academia and industry, has been developing artificial hearts and related technologies over the last decade or more. We have teamed with leading academic, healthcare and industry partners to launch a new program to develop the world’s most advanced artificial heart, and the next generation of cardiovascular technology to support all patients with heart failure.

This role is a unique opportunity within the Artificial Heart Frontiers Program, dedicated to revolutionising the next generation of implantable heart devices. The program is a multidisciplinary consortium at the University of Queensland (UQ) that leverages cutting-edge technologies to transform the healthcare landscape for individuals with heart failure. With an unwavering commitment to pioneering implantable heart devices in Australia, we aim to save countless lives today and in the future.

Our Design team at UQ is at the forefront of translating ground-breaking research into commercial opportunities, with a strong focus on enhancing the quality of life for patients. Within this role, you will specifically focus on the design aspects of Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) devices as part of the MRFF (Medical Research Future Fund) grant, working closely with the Professor of Design leading this critical component.

Key responsibilities will include: 

Design
  • Lead the identification and design of tools, processes and templates to streamline teaching services with emphasis on good curriculum, pedagogical and assessment design.

  • Provide leadership on the design of the MRFF project work and outcomes required to support the successful interdisciplinary project.

  • Provide strategic support and advice to key stakeholders (eg. the other Chief Investigators, Post-Docs, Research Assistants.

Technical/Scientific
  • Define technical/scientific requirements, dependences, milestones and sequences for research programs/projects that may vary in size, scope and phase of delivery.

  • Manage and facilitate access and use of technical research facilities, equipment and capabilities required to effectively deliver research outcomes.

  • Assist project/program leaders with identifying the technical and specialist capabilities required to deliver key research project/program outcomes and support the recruitment of required staff.

Collaboration and Engagement
  • Collaborate with faculties, industry partners and UQ staff, to design, develop and implement institutional approaches to MCS research.

  • Provide leadership within the broader university community through the dissemination of technological design skills and knowledge.

  • Build and maintain on-going relationships with key internal and external stakeholders through consultation and engagement as required, in order to deliver learning and development priorities, objectives and programs/projects.

Project Management
  • Work closely with Chief Investigators and their research teams to identify develop and implement programs/projects as relevant to the specific stage/stages of the research life cycle.

  • Provide input to the development of appropriate performance measures relating to research/program planning, targets, key performance indicators and/or deliverables, assessing and implementing changes as required.

  • Contribute to project quality assurance, control and improvement activities, in collaboration with senior research staff and stakeholders.

  • Report on performance outcomes that deliver accurate measures for attaining key project goals and refine monitoring, reporting and communication requirements.

Safety
  • Ensure staff adhere to a high standard of occupational health and safety standards and systems, including inductions, supervision, equipment training registers, administration of research Facilities, Inventories, reporting and investigating injuries, incidents and hazards. 

  • Other duties as reasonably requested by the supervisor.

This is a full-time (100%), fixed-term position for up to 4 years.

At HEW level 8, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $108,975.08 - $122,176.31, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $127,500.84 - $142,946.29 annually. As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases – at least once a year.

About You  

  • Postdoctoral qualifications or progress towards postgraduate qualification in Industrial Design or Product Design and extensive relevant industry experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.

  • Experience in Mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices, with an understanding of manufacturing requirements and constraints related to product manufacturing.

  • Demonstrated ideation and conceptual skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work iteratively, adapting quickly to change and operating effectively both on an autonomous basis and as a member of a collaborative, client-focused team.

  • Demonstrated capacity to develop, manage and coordinate research projects in a multidisciplinary university environment.

  • A very high level of digital literacy in software applications, including 3D CAD software, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, as well as corporate applications for financial and resource management.

  • Demonstrated strong hand sketching abilities, with a proven ability to communicate design effectively with a variety of audiences.

  • Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, along with the ability to develop and maintain strong collaborative linkages with diverse stakeholders, and a demonstrated commitment to responding to client needs.

  • Demonstrated high level organisational ability, attention to detail and ability to work to tight deadlines and manage competing priorities.

  • Proven ability and experience in designing and managing projects using structured methodologies to identify requirements, and to Design and implement solutions in a timely manner.
