Southerly Designs is a dynamic and innovative naval architecture and design firm that has been at the forefront of high-speed aluminium vessel design since 1997.
Drawing on over 60 years of experience in designing, constructing and operating fast commercial vessels, our professional and dedicated team has forged an enviable reputation for producing robust vessels that are practical, handle well even in extreme conditions, are fuel efficient and offer comfort without sacrificing performance.
Currently servicing shipyards in Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, China, Canada and Africa there are up to 30 vessels under contract, and over 600 Southerly Design vessels from 5 m to 50m operating in diverse roles globally.
We currently have an opportunity for an experienced Senior Draftsperson/Naval Architect to join our growing team and provide leadership and technical expertise and support to more junior team members.
While the role will be based in Perth, there will be a requirement for an initial period of training and induction to be undertaken at our head office in Port Denison. Additionally, for suitable applicants seeking a Sea Change, there is the option for the role to be permanently located in Port Denison.
ABOUT THE ROLE
In this role, you will primarily be responsible for the following:
- Leading a small team of designers in the design of vessel structures and systems.
- Preparing and checking structural, mechanical, systems and other drawings, using CAD Software such as Rhino and Auto Cad and Ship Constructor
- Presenting structural drawings for Class approval and workshop use.
- Establishing and maintaining CAD drafting standards
- Ensuring that project files and records are maintained in accordance with company policies and procedures.
- Reviewing technical specifications and understanding project requirements
- Vessel arrangements
- Supervising, mentoring and directing junior staff.
ABOUT YOU
Our ideal candidate will have the following qualifications, skills and attributes:
- A minimum of 7 years relevant experience in a marine design setting.
- A relevant tertiary qualification in CAD drafting or a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/Naval Architecture.
- Current experience and substantial working knowledge of ShipConstructor software.
- Proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD, Rhino, MicroStation
- Proficency in MaxSurf suite of software
- Previous supervisory experience and proven ability to manage and motivate a team.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
