About the Organisation
The Wujal Wujal community is in the Cape York region on the banks of the Bloomfield River and is surrounded by high mountains, waterfalls, river tributaries and creeks. The area’s boundaries are the Cook Shire to the north and Douglas Shire to the south. Wujal Wujal is located about four hours north of Cairns or one hour south of Cooktown by inland road. Wujal Wujal covers an area of 64 Hectares and the Shire has a tropical climate with both dry and wet seasons.
Located between two UNESCO World Heritage sites, Wujal Wujal is where the rainforest meets the reef –a haven for nature lovers, photographers,and travellers. The population of the Wujal Wujal Community is approx.400 people.
Tropical Cyclone Jasper caused extreme rainfall in December 2023, resulting in severe flooding across the region. Many homes were completely inundated, forcing residents to evacuate. With the help of the army, Red Cross, and numerous other supporting organisations, Wujual Wujal is rebuilding and looking forward to reuniting its strong community. About the Position
As the Senior HR Officer, you will report to the Chief Executive Officer and play a crucial role in shaping the success of the Council. With a focus on strategic HR practices, you will be responsible for HR administration, recruitment, training, and performance management, ensuring compliance with employment laws and accurate HR records management.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop Council's HR, financial, and procurement delegations.
- Create a comprehensive HR record of position numbers, titles, delegations, position levels, salary awards, salary levels (Division, section, etc.), salary amounts, current incumbents, and security items.
- Implement annual performance reviews for all staff in collaboration with Department Managers.
- Review Council's existing HR policies, develop and implement policies and procedures where required, and present these to staff to ensure understanding and acceptance.
- Facilitate staff performance management, disciplinary procedures, and terminations as required.
- Facilitate recruitment, including advertising, shortlisting, interviewing, selections, and onboarding.
- Facilitate staff inductions in collaboration with Managers, including access and training of new staff.
- Establish a Council Casual Pool of Operations Staff for Works and Building Services.
- Provide training, mentoring and support to upskill a HR Trainee.
- Provide support and guidance to Council management, ELT, and the CEO.
- Facilitate staff training and development opportunities and maintain accurate records of training undertaken.
- Maintain compliance with local government employment laws, regulations and recommended best practices.
- Perform other duties as required.
About You
An experienced HR professional, you will bring a passion for HR together with your knowledge and expertise to the role. Key qualifications and attributes include:
- Experience working successfully in a cross-cultural environment.
- Proven experience in senior-level HR administration, including recruitment, performance management, and policy development.
- In depth knowledge of HR policies, procedures, and employment laws, ensuring compliance and implementing best practices to create a fair and inclusive work environment.
- Track record of successfully working with multi-disciplinary teams, fostering collaboration, and providing HR guidance to stakeholders at all levels.
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, allowing you to effectively communicate complex HR concepts and policies, tailored to suit the audience.
- Ability to align HR strategies with organisational objectives to contribute to community's growth and success.
- Strong attention to detail and organisational skills, ensuring meticulous execution of HR initiatives and maintaining accurate records.
