Job description

CPB Contractors is the CIMIC Group’s construction company and a leading international construction contractor, with operations across Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

Combining the expertise and track record formerly delivered by Leighton Contractors and Thiess, we deliver projects spanning all key sectors of the construction industry, including roads, rail, tunnelling, defence and building.

Our mission is to generate sustainable returns for our shareholders by delivering projects for our clients, while providing safe, rewarding and fulfilling careers for our people. We need people who are talented, motivated and disciplined, and who have a strong work ethic that drives them to succeed.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a confident Senior Legal Counsel to provide CPB Contractors and its major projects with timely and pragmatic legal advice regarding the application of workplace health and safety laws and regulations.

Reporting to the Legal Manager, the Senior Legal Counsel will primarily be accountable for:

  • Reporting to our shareholder, CIMIC
  • Assisting businesses to prepare risk management plans and answer tender questions
  • Instructing and managing external counsel where applicable
  • Identifying solutions, owning decisions and resolving issues as they arise, whilst collaborating with managers and stakeholders
  • Proactively identifying opportunities for increasing efficiency and innovation in providing legal advice
  • Providing guidance and mentoring to Legal Counsel in the team
  • Creating and maintaining effective working relationships across the business
  • Improving CPB’s external and internal relations through displaying professionalism
  • Briefing, liaising and overseeing service providers, ensuring compliance with CPB and CIMIC standards
  • Keeping up to date with and project managing Company’s response to compliance, legislative and regulatory issues as they arise.

Our minimum requirements for this role are:

  • Bachelor of Law (LLB or equivalent)
  • Qualified to practice as a solicitor in an Australian jurisdiction – holding (or entitled to hold) current practicing certificate
  • 10 years + post qualification experience, with a focus on workplace health and safety matters
  • Strong understanding of relevant legislation (harmonized and non-harmonised legal framework) and accompanying regulations
  • Experience in managing critical workplace incidents and general risk management
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent legal drafting skills
  • Risk assessment and risk mitigation skills
  • Ability to work autonomously and a can-do attitude
  • Ethics and values consistent with CIMIC values.

We support diversity in the workplace. Women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and people with a multicultural background are strongly encouraged to apply.
