About The Opportunity

NSW Health Pathology is currently seeking an experienced, competent senior microbiology scientist to join a dynamic, technologically advanced 24/7 core microbiology laboratory at the Westmead Precinct.

This is a busy laboratory that provides a full microbiological service using cutting edge technologies.

What You'll Be DoingResponsible for the management of scientific, technical and support staff, all testing and associated activities and logistics for the assigned laboratory. The position is involved in the quality, cost and operational integrity of the department, regulatory compliance and accreditation of laboratory services in the department, human resource, business and resource management.

  • Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification, with subjects relevant to pathology from a recognised tertiary institution.
  • Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers, patients and clinical and laboratory staff, along with report writing skills, statistical evaluation of scientific data and the ability to effectively communicate policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of accreditation frameworks, relevant standards and quality systems, and the ability to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities in accordance with NATA/NPAAC/ISO accreditation and certification
  • Demonstrated managerial skills with experience in laboratory operations, administration and budgeting
  • Advanced knowledge of Pathology Laboratory Information Systems including supervision of e-based Quality Management Systems
  • Extensive high level knowledge of working within the relevant section of the laboratory with knowledge of the operation and maintenance of analytical equipment in a pathology laboratory
  • Sound understanding of legislation, policies and requirements that impact the laboratory environment including work health and safety and privacy requirements
  • Extensive relevant experience in a clinical microbiology laboratory, including experience in reading, analysing and interpreting cultures and associated antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and experience with laboratory automation

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious DiseasesThis is a Category A position. All Category A applicants must read and understand NSW Health Policy Directive PD2023_022 Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases . All recruits must agree to comply with the requirements outlined in this policy. All recruits must provide evidence against specified diseases and comply with the requirements of this policy at their own cost prior to appointment.

All NSW Health workers are required to have two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, as defined by NSW Health. Employees working in a clinical area or are required to attend clinical areas are considered category A. Category A positions are required to provide evidence of having received three doses of COVID-19 vaccine in accordance with the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (TGA) and meet the requirements of the Occupational Assessment Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy Directive . You will be required to provide a record of your COVID-19 vaccination status if successful.

Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
