Reporting to the Technical Coordinator, Electrical, Electronics and Mechatronics the Senior Technical Officer performs a critical role in our School of Engineering.  The position provides expert technical support to staff, students, and other stakeholders undertaking experiments for teaching and research within the laboratory or in the field. The role will entail assisting in the design and development of complex experiments, preparing equipment, and maintaining accurate and up-to-date written procedures.

As a Senior Technical Officer your duties include:

  • Proactively engage with teaching activities, in collaboration with academic staff, by providing specialist knowledge and training on how to work on equipment and engineering software relevant to the electrical and mechatronics and related disciplines. This will include student activities related to teaching in coursework, HDR or final year projects.
  • Ensure that laboratory equipment is maintained and operated to a safe and high standard and carry out minor repairs to equipment and coordinate with stakeholders within Deakin or outside service engineers as necessary including calibration and maintenance of a wide range of laboratory equipment.
  • Establish digital, physical design and prototyping methodologies workflows and learning resource development.
  • Develop alternative design solutions or quick engineering solutions for complex problems whilst communicating with team members and customers on all project related matters.

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • A Degree with subsequent relevant experience; or
  • Extensive experience in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Digital and Rapid prototyping or related disciplines. or
  • An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Ability to work with and train research staff and students.

Special Requirements

  • Infrequent work outside business hours is required (e.g., work at evening or weekend events is required)
  • Infrequent travel is required including between campuses
