Senior Wildlife Officers in the Northern Region Operations have a focus on wildlife management. This includes working with crocodiles, cassowaries and flying foxes. This may require safely responding to isolated and remote situations in North Queensland for extended periods of time. Tasks are likely to include operating communication and navigational systems, employing survival techniques, undertaking equipment repair, and the use of environmental indicators to make decisions

As a Senior Wildlife Officer, you will be required to coordinate operational business and lead the Remote Operations team of Wildlife Officers in wildlife responses, projects and compliance and to coordinate ongoing and emerging stakeholder relationships, building and fostering Traditional knowledge and culture within the workplace. The Senior Wildlife Officer role advertised is part of the Remote Operations team.
The team operates in Far North Queensland to deliver services to conserve and protect native and threatened wildlife and associated habitat—with particular focus on:

  • regulation of the Nature Conservation Act to deliver protected wildlife compliance and enforcement
  • providing safe interaction between people and wildlife
  • working with the community to build positive interactions between community and wildlife
  • applied research to assist in the development of innovative wildlife management strategies
Highly desirable skills for this role will be:
  • Extensive experience in contemporary wildlife management and conservation.
  • Possess knowledge of wildlife management principles and human-wildlife conflict.
  • Experience with crocodiles, cassowaries, flying foxes.
  • Considerable experience managing operational staff.
This position can be based in either the Townsville, Innisfail or Cairns Offices, but may require travel to other locations from time to time, including overnight stays. Wildlife Officers participate in (after-hours) incident response and work on a roster basis which can include regular weekend work. In successfully undertaking this role, you will also be required to regularly crew small vessels and work in field based situations.
