As a vital part of the criminal justice system, Sheriff's Officers contribute to the security and efficiency of court proceedings. Responsibilities include point of entry security screening, prisoner management, in-court support, Jury management and maintaining order within the courtrooms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide exceptional customer service and information to all court users.
  • Provide security and maintain order within the court precinct.
  • Assist Jurors, Witnesses and other court participants with court processes.
  • Oversee emergency evacuations, ensuring the safety of all individuals present.
  • Respond to various emergency situations.

Special Conditions:

  • This is a Part-time ongoing role (minimum 20 hours per week), Located at Port Augusta Magistrates Court. The successful applicant will work at least 4 hours per day, Monday to Friday. However, additional hours may be offered, based on the business needs of the Sheriff's Office.
  • Appointment is under the Courts Administration Act, 1993. Terms and conditions of employment are governed by the Public Sector Act, 2009.
  • This role is identified as a Prescribed Position and the successful applicant is required to obtain a Working with Children Check (WWCC) prior to employment with CAA, which must be renewed every five years before expiry. WWCC's can be obtained through the Department of Human Services (DHS) Screening Unit https://screening.sa.gov.au
  • Appointment is dependent upon a National Police Clearance that the CAA finds satisfactory.
  • As a justice agency, the CAA may receive details of spent convictions as part of any Criminal History Screening and use this information in the selection process.
  • Incumbents will be provided with training in all aspects of the Sheriff's Officer role and will be required to participate in ongoing refresher training as per Sheriff's Office policy.
  • Sheriff's Officers hold an appointment as a security officer pursuant to the Sheriff's Act, 1978.
  • May be required to work in alternate locations at the discretion of the Sheriff or due to the requirements of the courts.
  • May be required to work outside of the normal hours of work and undertake intrastate travel, which may necessitate overnight absences.
  • Appointees may be required to disclose their COVID-19 vaccination status.

Renumeration:

  • OPS2- ($57,842 to $62,221 per annum) (adjusted to part time / actual hours worked)
