The Site Engineer is responsible for carrying out on-site quality and assurance inspections. This will involve reviewing and understanding the slab’s structural drawings, concrete mix design, concrete specification, and any other associated documentation/ information regarding the project.
The Site Engineer is responsible for carrying out pre-pour and main pour inspections. During the pre-pour inspection, you are required to inspect all on site detailing relating to the slab’s construction, sub-base levels and the condition of the ground, jointing and reinforcing requirements and identify any variations to the design. You are to then liaise with the Main Contractor, Flooring Contractor and any other relevant personnel regarding design discrepancies and slab casting requirements. A report is to then be generated through Face Consultant’s specialist Upvise application and issued to relevant stakeholders prior to the concrete pour.
Pour inspections will require you to inspect the close out of pre-pour inspection items as well as monitoring the concrete placement throughout the pour. This will involve observing concrete testing; slump test, air tests, concrete cylinders and potentially additional testing if required. The condition of the concrete is also to be monitored with a close record to be kept of any water addition on site and arrival and discharge times of all concrete trucks. A keen eye is needed for concrete and its properties, detailing and recording all information in Face’s Upvise reporting application whilst still observing the condition of the sub-base, reinforcement, and jointing details throughout the pour. You
will be required to ensure the suitability and compliance of the concrete pour.
Following casting and finishing operations, a post pour inspection is to be conducted to identify any surface defects within the cast slab with photographs of the condition of the concrete.
A comprehensive report covering the pre-pour inspection, pour inspection and post pour inspection is to be compiled following the completion of every slab’s QA inspection. This report will be reviewed by another engineer/ senior engineer and then issued to the client (typically the developer or the facilities tenant although this can vary), the main contractor and the flooring contractor. The role of the QA inspection report is to highlight issues identified, provide proof of rectification, action items requiring comment/ sign-off from the design engineer and to report on the conditions of the pour. It is essential that these reports are completed comprehensively to provide historical evidence of the
preparation, casting and finishing condition of the slab.
Surveying:
You will be required to undertake specialist surveys to identify floor flatness and levelness characteristics, at times this will involve the use of Face Consultant’s proprietary equipment. Surveying will typically be done in accordance with relevant standards, commonly in line with The Concrete Society’s TR34 4th Edition’s Defined Movement Surveys or Free Movement Surveys. At times, specific client/ usage requirements will need to be surveyed, this can include but is not limited
to Amazon, Geek+, Autostore, Ocado and Greyorange.
Other works
DLP and specific characteristic testing of the floor i.e. abrasion, roughness, friction and gloss. Training will be provided.
