About us:
John Hunter Children’s Hospital (JHCH) is part of The Children, Young People and Families Directorate of Hunter New England Local Health District. It is one of three tertiary children’s hospitals in NSW, the only one situated outside of a capital city. JHCH is made up of four wards, a neonatal intensive care unit, outpatients department, school room, and oncology day stay unit.
About the job:
- In this role you will work within the John Hunter Children’s Hospital Social Work Service.
- Join a team that is passionate about improving the health and psychosocial outcomes for Children, Young People and their Families. This is a collaborative team within a supportive learning and development culture.
- This position will work across the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Special Care Nursery and Outpatient follow-up clinics.
- Working with families in states of crisis, grief, hope and adjustment. This role will be undertaking crisis psychosocial assessments with some situations requiring longer-term intervention and psychological and psychosocial support to patients and their families. This role will work alongside other NICU Social Workers as well as other Social Workers working within the Children’s Hospital.
- In this role you will be supported through an orientation period. There will be opportunities for relevant ongoing professional education and development. You will receive both professional supervision and line management support.
- In this position you will work Tuesdays, Thursdays and every second Wednesday.

Requirements:
Our successful candidate will possess the following:
- Tertiary qualifications in Social Work, with eligibility for membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).
- Eligibility to drive in NSW and willingness to travel for work purposes.
- Willingness and ability to actively participate in the After Hours On Call roster providing crisis response across John Hunter and John Hunter Children’s Hospital.
- Passion for supporting families at times of crisis and adjustment and providing child-centred social work practice.
- Passion for supporting parents with postnatal mental health needs.
- Open to learning and innovation in clinical practice.
