This role is responsible for software design and architecture of inhouse developed applications and integration systems. The role will lead and mentor a team of software engineers from diverse backgrounds, geographically dispersed (consisting of both internal and external/outsourced technical resources) and across different levels of experience. The role is responsible for the personal development of the software engineering community and will foster a culture of ownership and positivity and ensures a working environment that helps the team remain effective, inclusive and innovative.
This role works closely with peers within the technology department who are responsible for product strategy and delivery. The primary business domains where the software is used are Airport Technology, Operations Delivery, Aircraft Engineering, Corporate Tech and Commercial Airline Technology.
A key challenge of this role is to successfully build, maintain and improve a complex platform environment with custom build software products and leveraging technology platforms across the broader Qantas Group Technology.
Although this role is heavily technology focused, it is critically important to maintain a strong delivery and customer focus.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and manage budget for the operations applications and team
- Track and control spend and take corrective / preventive actions as necessary
- Conduct research in regards technology trends, identify opportunities & challenges, share with stakeholders
- Work closely with the Qantas Group Technology community to leverage Group platforms and technologies where applicable
- Identify and drive technology innovations. Influence stakeholders to obtain buy-in
- Responsible for development of prototypes and proof-of-concepts
- Lead, manage, mentor and develop the team
- Develop resource plan to scale delivery as needed to meet approved demands
- Plan, prioritise and allocate projects to the team members
- Foster a collaborative, productive, friendly and passionate team environment.
- Ensure the retention of critical technical IP
- Tertiary education in Computer Science or Software Engineering
- 10+ experience in IT / Software / Technology
- 5+ leadership experience in IT / Software / Technology
- Proven experience with operating and managing business critical systems, in particular large commercially driven web sites.
- Strong track record of managing large / concurrent program of work
- Experience with large scale / enterprise level projects
- Experience with working within a dynamic and fast paced team environment.
- Experience in aviation and / or travel related industry (preferred)
- Knowledge and understanding of aviation & travel technologies (preferred)
- Strong and effective leadership skills with the ability to lead & manage teams.
- Strong problem solving skills, using a flexible approach and demonstrating tolerance for ambiguity.
- Strong analytical and conceptual skills
- Proven vendor management, contracting and negotiations skills
- Ability to develop and present strategies and plans
- Demonstrated organisational expertise
- Advanced understanding of digital experience technology
- Solid understanding of e-commerce principles and transactional e-commerce platforms / booking engines
- In-depth knowledge of Software Development processes, including AGILE
- Sound business acumen and understanding of commercial practices
- Sound understanding of project management methods
- Solid knowledge of product management principles and practices
- Good understanding of operation and support processes
