About the roleFinding better ways to provide the materials the world needs.At Rio Tinto, we particularly welcome and encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, women, the LGBTI+ community, mature workers, people with disabilities and people from different cultural backgrounds.We are looking for an experienced Specialist Safety to use your technical knowledge and interpersonal skills to effectively partner with various stakeholders, to define and deliver Iron Ore wide health and safety improvement projects.This is a great opportunity for a data driven professional to provide insights and guidance to senior health and safety leaders and peers on best practice to keep our people safe.Reporting to the Manager Safety and Emergency Services in HSEC Technical, you will:
  • Shape and support the delivery of risk reduction and improvement initiatives linked to the annual and 5-year HSEC Strategic Plans
  • Development of insights through data-driven approach leading to initiatives to protect our people and improve safety performance
  • Support the development and maintenance of safety management systems including documentation to ensure compliance with RT Safety Standards and statutory requirements
  • Collaborate closely with the Safety AoE, industry partners and stakeholders regarding best practice safety programs and management of risk
  • Actively foster and communicate a positive safety culture to promote safety awareness and compliance
  • Support professional activities for H&S personnel working in HSEC Operational Delivery teams (ie: community of practice)
  • Work closely with our functional partners such Procurement, Capability & Development and Human Resources to support integration of safety into business processes.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement by identifying, evaluating and implementing improvement opportunities utilising a range of Rio Tinto best practices
What you’ll bringTo be successful in this role you will
  • Tertiary Qualification in Health and Safety or Certificate IV with >5 years technical experience
  • Sound understanding of safety management systems and their practical application
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability
  • Effective communication, engagement and influencing skills
  • Robust planning & organisation skills
  • Managing change and leading through change
It will also be beneficial if you have:
  • Business improvement exposure or certification (practical problem solving, Kaizen)
  • Exposure and knowledge to Human Organisational Performance
  • 5-10 years Technical experience in Health and Safety
