4Tel is a leading communications and systems integration company with experience across various transport sectors both domestically and internationally. We are expanding our Shift Technician team in Newcastle, NSW as a result of recent growth.

We are looking for a IT Support Technician who has an interest in learning about:
- Installation and maintenance of communications and control systems
- Administration of Unix and Windows platforms
- Systems-based approach to fault finding and diagnosis
- Technical documentation and engineering report preparation; and
- Complying with current cyber security practices
We understand that the ideal candidate may come from a range of different industries and have differing experience to those who might have previously applied for this role, so we are interested in receiving applications from people who might have and of the following:
- Experience in electrical, IT, communications, cabling, or engineering;
- TAFE or other certificate level; or,
- The attitude to learn, follow process, and have an inquisitive nature. Having an interest in tinkering with technology is ideal!
We are looking to fill this role within our on-site Support Technician team. This role will be part of a wider team who provide 24x7 support to a real time train control environment in Newcastle NSW. This role is considered an essential role and will be required to work onsite through any Government mandated lockdowns.
We have built the roster for this role around a principle of ensuring staff can maximise their time both at work, and when they are not at work. We operate on 12 hour shifts and will generally roster staff to work: Day, Day, Night, Night, Off, Off, Off, Off basis. This role is classified as Rail Safety Workers which means that the successful candidates will need to pass a Rail Safety Medical including Drug and Alcohol test prior to commencement. Due to the safety critical nature of the work, applicants must have full RGB sight spectrum.
We will provide on the job training to the successful candidates to ensure that they are well equipped to manage the technical challenges that come with working in such a unique environment.
An average shift would comprise (but not limited to):
- A pre-shift handover with fellow technician
- Scanning and checking systems for alerts
- Working in and amongst the Client facility
- Liaising with the Client staff for any system errors
- Escalating issues that need attention
- Following processes defined
- Undertaking ad-hoc investigations as requested
- Answering the phone
- Making calls to technicians
- Taking part in team meetings and social activities
Technical services potentially required include:
- Installation and maintenance of communications and control systems
- Administration of Unix and Windows platforms
- Systems-based approach to fault finding and diagnosis
- Technical documentation and supporting engineering report preparation
- Complying with current cyber security practices
We will negotiate the salary for the successful candidate according to skill and time in industry.
What training and benefits will be provided?We are able to provide on the job training to assist with your understanding of the control and communication systems that we support through our current technical team. They will also assist you in understanding the systems deployment, maintenance and administration components of the role and most importantly – who to ask for the more difficult questions. Entry level positions will not have the responsibility to take on task above their competency.

This role is only open to those who are permanent residents of Australia and preferably from the greater Newcastle area, or those willing to relocate at their own expense to Newcastle, NSW.
