Job description

The Inspectorate Team Leader - Southern NSW Region is responsible for leading a team of Inspectors in responding to reports of cruelty, conducting investigations, and advocating the prevention of animal cruelty across NSW as well as engaging with stakeholders in relation to the application of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979. 
 
About the Role
  • Develop, manage, lead, train, and develop a team of Inspectors to the highest levels of performance, engagement, and job satisfaction
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the Inspectorate business plan to deliver the required performance outcomes in accordance with broader organizational goals, and within budget
  • Triage reports of cruelty and allocate those requiring action by RSPCA NSW to Inspectors, ensuring appropriate risk assessments and support are in place
  • Manage Inspector animal intake and capacity process
  • Audit and manage Inspector cruelty complaint workflow
  • Conduct and complete probationary and quarterly Inspector reviews
  • Review and approve the release of animals in protective custody
  • Assess, monitor, and support Inspectors with the management of cases to ensure swift responses and sustainable resolution of issues that achieve the best possible animal welfare, compliance, enforcement, and prosecution outcomes
  • Oversee and advise on the rescue and seizure of animals ensuring animal evaluation, care, case management, and reporting meet legal requirements and provide the best chance for case resolution with good animal welfare outcomes
  • Develop strategies, processes, and procedures to improve the quality, efficiency, and consistency of investigation activities, evidence gathering, enforcement actions, and brief preparation
  • Improve animal welfare within the community by effectively liaising and building capacity with key stakeholders locally and across the state, identifying opportunities for collaboration, cross-training, and strategic partnerships, to expand the RSPCA’s reach in effectively responding to animal welfare issues and preventing cruelty
  • Positively represent RSPCA NSW in various public forums including educational, media, and promotional activities, and building and maintaining positive relationships 
  • Provide technical expertise on POCTAA and its application to members of the team, animal owners, members of the public, and other stakeholders as required
  • Participate in and coordinate a team response where required as part of emergency response
  • Review animal welfare policies and legislation, keeping abreast of changes impacting Inspectorate activities, ensuring materials and practices are relevant, accurate, current, and utilized by Inspectors
  • Daily monitoring and management of Inspector location devices and issued radios
About You
  • Tertiary qualification in an animal-related or legal-related subject, desirable
  • Unrestricted driver's license, essential
  • NSW Firearms license, essential
  • Demonstrated track record of consistently achieving the performance and behavioral expectations as an Inspector
  • Experience in handling and providing guidance to less experienced Inspectors across a range of companion and livestock species, including, but not limited to, dogs, cats, and horses
  • Aptitude for reading, interpreting, and applying legislation – previous experience in a regulatory role is highly regarded
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to manage high-conflict situations
  • Outstanding verbal communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Able to remain calm whilst working under pressure
