Technical Assistant (Agricultural and Environmental Science)
We are seeking a motivated Technical Assistant to provide technical support within our dynamic academic environment – with focus on teaching support for the disciplines of Agricultural and Environmental Science.
Level 4, part-time (specified roster) appointment on a permanent/ongoing basis (0.53FTE annualised).
Base salary range: $70,905 - $75,319 p.a. (pro rata) plus 17% superannuation.
Position based at Crawley Campus.

About the teamAs part of College Services, you will join the Technical Services team. College Services provides academic administration and technical support services to the University’s schools, including Heads of School, academic staff and research students. Technical Services provides discipline specific, applied knowledge and skill sets to support UWA’s teaching and research goals in unison with our academic staff.
This team underpins training and learning across the broad Field of Education of “Natural, Agricultural and Social Sciences” and may include disciplines such as animal biology, plant biology, archaeology, geography and the characterisation/analysis of environmental materials, including the curation of associated resources. This team supports teaching both on and off campus which may include fieldwork.
About the opportunityThis role will primarily provide support to practical teaching aspects in disciplines associated with Agricultural and Environmental Science. This includes offering technical assistance to academics, technical staff, and students for practical activities under general direction. You will have the opportunity to work in an educational laboratory setting, participate in field trips, and contribute to the enhancement of our educational programs. Flexibility in working hours is essential to accommodate busy teaching periods.
Key responsibilities include preparing materials, equipment, and instruments for teaching sessions, collaborating with academic staff and technical colleagues to execute practical exercises, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. Additionally, the role involves contributing to equipment maintenance and procurement, as well as assisting with administrative tasks and audits. Ensuring compliance with safety regulations and promoting established work systems are integral aspects of the position.
Peak PeriodsThis position is 0.4 FTE during off-peak periods (31 weeks per year), and 0.8-0.6 FTE during peak periods only (21 weeks per year). Peak periods run from calendar Week 9 to Week 20 and again from Week 30 to Week 38. While specific dates change year to year, in 2024 you can expect to work 0.8 FTE from Monday, 26 February to Friday, 17 May 2024 and 0.6 FTE from Monday, 22 July to Friday, 20 September 2024.
About you The ideal candidate for this role should hold Year 12 or equivalent qualifications, coupled with substantial experience at a relevant level. Proficiency in essential laboratory techniques like microscopy and chemical handling is valued, along with current C-class drivers’ licence for logistical support. Strong communication abilities, both written and verbal, are essential, as is the capacity to work autonomously and collaboratively in problem-solving situations.
Moreover, candidates should possess excellent organisational skills, demonstrating the ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines effectively. Proficiency in computing skills, encompassing word processing, spreadsheets, email, and online systems, is necessary. The preferred candidate will display initiative and productivity, reflecting a commitment to fulfilling departmental goals efficiently while working both independently and as part of a team.
