The Residues and Food Branch is responsible for regulation, policy development, and implementation of dairy, fish and egg exporters, organic exports, the exports of non-prescribed food and animal by-products, and imported food controls (food safety). This includes the development of legislation, operational policy and guidelines, instructional material, technical training (and its delivery), reporting and engagement of industry and government stakeholders. The branch is also responsible for the National Residue Survey which conducts animal and plant residue testing for participating industries – a critical component underpinning Australia’s favourable market access arrangements.
The Imported Food Section administers the Imported Food Control Act 1992 which supports the inspection and testing of imported food to verify its safety and compliance with Australia’s food standards. The section is responsible for verifying food safety risks have been managed through the at-border risk-based, Imported Food Inspection Scheme. The section also responds to, and supports, Australian action on food safety incidents associated with imported food. The section provides technical and administrative support to officers responsible for assessing and processing electronic entries of food consignments and conducting inspections of food imported into Australia. The section also liaises with food importers, peak industry groups, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), state/territory food regulators, laboratories and trading partners.
The Job
The duties of the role include, but are not limited to:
- assisting with the management of the electronic systems that support the operation of the Imported Food Inspection Scheme (IFIS), including managing system updates to support implementation of changes to the referral, assessment and inspection of imported food
- managing requirements for the profiling of imported food; investigating referral issues and assisting with the design of the electronic profiles
- contributing to section reporting, including using Power BI to develop reports and analyse data
- providing technical advice to importers, operational staff and other stakeholders on imported food matters
- contributing to the development of documented procedures and work instructions for Canberra based and regional staff to ensure requirements are applied consistently
- managing updates to the imported food web pages on the departments website as well as the Sharepoint team site
- preparing draft reports, policy documents, briefing papers, ministerial submissions, general correspondence and industry notices.
What we are looking for
Knowledge and experience
Experience with, or knowledge of, the following will be an advantage:
- Australia’s food regulatory system and relevant import legislation.
- Operation of the IFIS.
- Microsoft Excel.
- Data analysis and reporting, including use of Power BI.
