What you'll be doing

Trainee will complete Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice, completed over 2 years. Under supervision, and as part of a multidisciplinary team, provide appropriate health care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers and develop the necessary skills and knowledge to become an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner.

Successfully complete a Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice whilst employed full time, balancing workplace, study and clinical placement requirements of the role.

Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice qualification reflects the role of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people working to provide a range of clinical primary health care services to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients and communities, including specific health care programs, advice and assistance with, and administration of, medication.

These workers can be expected to flexibly assume a variety of job roles and undertake a broad range of tasks either individually or as a member of a multidisciplinary team.

This qualification addresses the specific legislative responsibilities of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners and is required for national registration with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice Board of Australia.

Northern Sydney Local Health District deems it appropriate to seek confirmation of Aboriginality status from applicants applying for Aboriginal identified positions. Confirmation of Aboriginality can be provided as evidence via:

a) a confirmation with a common seal on it from an Aboriginal organisation; or

b) a reference letter stating that the person is Aboriginal and accepted by community. (The letter must be supplied by an Aboriginal organisation)

  2. Being of Aboriginal &/or Torres Strait Islander descent is a genuine occupational qualification for this position under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
  3. Currently undertaking Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice, and has completed over 2 years
  4. Be able to identify and address barriers faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people when accessing mainstream primary care services, including but not limited to primary care, pharmacy, allied health and specialists.
  5. Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
