Job description

Trainee Trade Mark Attorney / Newly RegisteredTrade Mark Attorney

  • Entry-level role, with training towards becoming a registered Trade Mark Attorney
  • Exposure to local and international client work
  • Ongoing professional development and support
  • Permanent full-time position (some flexibility)
  • Lovely offices in Adelaide CBD

Founded in 1968, Madderns is a well-established, independently owned and operated, leading Australian Patent and Trade Mark Attorney firm.  Our experienced team of attorneys provides highly-specialised intellectual property (IP) services and advice to enable our clients to secure and defend their brands and technologies.

We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic Trainee Trade Mark Attorney to join our Trade Mark team in Adelaide and assist our specialist Trade Mark Attorneys to protect our clients’ IP.

The Role

You will use your expertise and growing experience to assist our experienced Trade Mark Attorneys with their local and international client work – where they advise clients on all aspects of the acquisition and enforcement of Trade Mark rights including search analysis and advice, prosecution of domestic and overseas applications and opposition proceedings.  Working under the supervision of several experienced Trade Mark Attorneys, you will gain skills in client management, conducting searches and analysis, registrations, prosecutions, oppositions, renewals, and providing infringement advice.  You will be working with clients across many industry sectors such as food and wine, fashion, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, biotechnology and software/IT.

As a trainee, you will be expected to undertake studies in intellectual property law and comprehensive on-the job-training to become registered as a Trade Mark Attorney.

You will be encouraged to participate in networking events, seminars and other activities aimed towards growing your own Trade Mark practice.

What We Are Seeking

To be successful you will have a Bachelor’s degree in law or business. Ideally, you will have previous legal industry experience and be a lateral thinker who is able to critically analyse complex material and demonstrate high attention to detail.

You will be committed to your own career development, to ongoing learning, to studying and to becoming registered as a Trade Mark Attorney.

Fluency in English, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills, are critical to engage confidently with your team members and our clients; to understand and communicate legal concepts accurately; to assess incoming reports and correspondence issued by government offices; and to properly draft appropriate correspondence and advice.

You look forward to engaging with clients and providing them with high quality advice and service.  You are a team player who enjoys working with other people – you pride yourself on being respectful, reliable, helpful and supportive of team goals.

Newly qualified Trade Mark Attorneys (1 to 3 years’ experience) or candidates already undertaking legal studies that will lead towards registration as a Trade Mark Attorney are also encouraged to apply.

What We Offer

Madderns offers a rare opportunity to forge yourself a Trade Mark Attorney career within an established firm in a role that is both interesting and rewarding. You will come across many valuable brands for established and emerging businesses in Australia and overseas. You will work with and learn from attorneys that are consistently recognised in industry surveys as being experts in their field.  As your experience and skills develop, you will work more autonomously, meet a range of clients and progress your career to grow your own Trade Mark practice.

As a trainee, you will receive significant financial support and paid study leave to undertake post-graduate studies in intellectual property and Trade Mark law to complete the necessary requirements to become registered as a Trade Mark Attorney.  Your formal studies will be supplemented with practical experience across a wide range of client matters, together with on-the-job training, mentoring, in-house seminars, and ongoing support.

Within Madderns, you will experience excellent working conditions with access to a range of employee benefits, and enjoy a supportive, professional environment within our Adelaide team of 50 people.
