The Training and Development Lead plays a crucial role in supporting the operations of RSPCA NSW by overseeing the recruitment, training, and ongoing development of our dedicated volunteer team.The overall purpose of the role is to ensure that our organisations’ volunteer roster is always staffed with trained and skilled individuals, and that they are correctly utilised for the fulfilment of our mission.
Located at our Sydney Adoption Centre, you will be responsible for the on-job training of new and existing volunteers. You will be responsible for implementing training programs, facilitating volunteer engagement, and promoting a positive volunteer experience.

About the Role
Recruitment, Onboarding & Training
- Oversee the implementation of a comprehensive volunteer training program and provide recommendations to further enhance & build this program
- Conduct regular, scheduled informational and orientation sessions for new and existing volunteers
- Provide ongoing training opportunities and support to enhance volunteers' skills and knowledge
- Schedule, organise, and deliver regular training sessions for new and existing volunteers
- Utilise various training methodologies including hands-on, classroom-style, and online platforms
- Work with key stakeholders to develop a volunteer “buddy” (and/or mentoring) program that will be beneficial to both the new volunteer and a development opportunity for existing volunteers/staff
- Match new volunteers with mentor volunteers for shadowing and guidance
- Manage volunteer schedules and ensure coverage for essential shelter operations
- Coordinate volunteer activities, ensuring alignment with shelter needs & goals
- Regularly assess the effectiveness of training programs through feedback, direct observation, and periodic performance appraisals
- Conduct periodic performance assessments for volunteers
- Recognise outstanding contributions and address any performance concerns
- Compose, manage and review a volunteer post-shift feedback form via Better Impact that encourages volunteers to provide regular feedback about their shift and their experience
- Track, monitor and report on key engagement and participation metrics
- Cultivate a positive and nurturing learning environment that encourages continuous growth
- Recognize volunteer achievements, milestones, and contributions to motivate and retain valuable volunteers
- Promote our Reward and Recognition program to the wider organisation ensuring all stakeholders are aware of the program and know how to nominate volunteers
- Support and influence staff to work effectively with and build quality and enduring relationships with our volunteers and promote a ‘one team, one mission’ culture
- Create a staff ‘I’m a volunteer Coach’ recognition program
- Support the Volunteer Program Managers with the planning and coordination of the annual RSPCA NSW Volunteer Recognition Awards celebration event
About You
- Tertiary qualifications minimum in a relevant field (e.g., non-profit management, education, human resources)
- Certificate IV Training and Assessment, preferred
- Current driver's licence
- Prior experience in leading, training or mentoring large groups of volunteers or students
- Demonstrated experience in customer/volunteer management systems, Better Impact (desirable)
- Experienced leader with the ability to drive and motivate a team
- Animal handling experience, desirable
- Strong communication skills both written and verbal, with strong interpersonal skills
- Proven administration skills
- Initiative and ability to prioritise
- Excellent attention to detail
- Resilience – the ability to bounce back from the occasional setback
- Exceptional time management skills
