Job description

The Mater Hospital is looking for a dynamic, vibrant psychologist to join us in the Young Adult Support Unit team on a permanent part time basis.

About the role

The Young Adult Support Unit (YASU) is a specialist multidisciplinary team who adopt a developmentally sensitive, trauma informed and systemic approach to supporting adolescents and Young Adults with chronic medical conditions. Chronic medical conditions can impact a person’s physical, psychological, social and occupational wellbeing. Young people with chronic conditions often face more difficulties negotiating the tasks of adolescence and Young Adulthood than their healthy peers. Adolescents and Young Adults are distinct population with unique needs as they transition out of child/adolescent focused systems and into adult focused systems. As such, YASU provides integrated and holistic strengths-based assessment and evidence-based treatment to help this cohort develop, thrive, prosper and flourish. 

YASU currently has an opportunity available for an experienced, passionate, and motivated Psychologist to join the team. This position will be offered on a permanent part time basis (0.8FTE).

Salary range: $37.13 - $56.12 per hour plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900

What you’ll be doing

We are looking for a dynamic, vibrant psychologist to join our team. Tasks include:

  • Comprehensive psychosocial assessments of patients, including families, carers and significant others
  • Conducting psychological and psychometric assessment, in addition to producing reports for clients  
  • Implementing a range of interventions in relation to mental health and chronic health conditions
  • Facilitating established psychosocial group programs
  • Liaising with internal and external stakeholders (including other healthcare services, government and community agencies)
  • Advocating for the needs of Young Adults within the health care system, while supporting them, their families and carers
  • Applying a scientific, culturally informed and evidence-based approach to psychological practice and evaluating outcomes
  • Conducting comprehensive risk assessments and co-creating safety plans
  • Applying the principles of culturally safe care to psychological practice
  • Applying the principles of trauma-informed and strengths based care
  • Adapting psychological practice, including engagement with clients and relevant others, in response to the needs of people from diverse social identity groups including different cultural backgrounds

About you

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • General Psychology Registration via the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • A passion for working with adolescences and Young Adults
  • Demonstrated knowledge, expertise and skill in the provision of psychological interventions for adolescents and Young Adults 
  • Proven experience and ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team, establish priorities, exercise initiative, and deliver outputs within agreed timeframes
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a proven ability and experience in establishing and developing key relationships with stakeholders
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to professional development and quality improvement and /or research in psychology
  • Demonstrated commitment to work, health and safety and positive patient experience
