Our Children, Youth and Families services offer a variety of child protection, youth justice, outreach, family intervention and family support services.
As a Casual Residential Youth Worker, based in Hervey Bay, your role will help support young people with high to complex needs and behaviours to have a stable, consistent, and predictable ‘home like’ environment - which is therapeutic and safe.
You will be the primary carer for young people during your shift. Your main role will be to keep them safe and get to know them whilst teaching life skills to establish a stable and consistent routine. You will work with the Coordinator and Service Manager to develop therapeutic interventions that will assist the young person with complex issues.
A day in the role of a Residential Youth Worker will include:
Plan, assist and engage young people in activities to help them reach their life goals, in a safe way.
Support and manage young people's behaviours using a Trauma Informed lens.
Work with young people to learn life skills in a planned and supported way.
Work with young people to maintain high standard of cleanliness, tidiness, and comfort within their home environment.
Complete daily case notes, admin tasks and incident reports.
Must be flexible in availability for sleepover, weekend, and awake shifts.
About you
The ideal person for this role would be genuine, understanding, empathetic, compassionate, with an open mindset and a sense of humour. Importantly you will be passionate about working with young people and to help create a positive and safe living environment. You will work with some of the most vulnerable people in the community. Communication, both written and oral, are essential for this - as is being able to take appropriate case notes.
Certificate IV or Diploma in Child, Youth & Family Intervention, Youth Services, Community Services or similar or be enrolled and working towards.
A paid Blue Card or have applied for one
Child Safety Personal History Check (LCS)
Completion of Hope and Healing Framework training
Current valid driver's license (Green provisional plates or higher)
Be able to provide 2 recent references
Already hold or are enrolled in a Certificate IV or higher in a relevant field prior to commencing work.
Ability to engage children and youth quickly and effectively and support them in the development of independent living skills
Sound understanding of child behaviour and development, working from a trauma-informed framework
Ability to observe and navigate the complex family dynamics often present for children in care
Confidence and professional response to crises - working within risk and compliance guidelines
A team player who works collaboratively, but can operate autonomously daily
Leadership skills and ability to provide a positive adult role model to young people, assisting them to develop confidence and self-worth
Effective contribution to Care Plans by providing evidence-based insight, assessments, and evaluations
Be willing and able to work a roster which will include weekends and overnight shifts.
