Job description

Our client is a federal government department that develops and implements policies and programmes that minimise our environmental impact and advocate for cultural heritage and environmental protection. In addition, they manage biosecurity risk to the country and ensure safe trade and market access for plants and animals fuelling farming, research and industry. The Opportunity

Working within these sections offers unique opportunities to contribute to Australia's export endeavours in different regions. In one section, you will engage in high-stakes negotiations with trading partners, shape trade agreements, and ensure compliance with international standards. You will also play a critical role in coordinating audits and developing positions on global trade regulations, offering a dynamic environment for those interested in international relations and policy development.
 
In the other section, professionals navigate technical market access conditions for a diverse range of products across multiple continents. Here, you can participate in international forums, influencing global standards and shaping Australia's position in the global market. Whether it's engaging in diplomatic negotiations or contributing to technical standards, both areas offer rewarding avenues for individuals passionate about international cooperation and trade.
 
The Role

The role involves actively contributing to critical issues affecting Australia's future in a specific industry by engaging in negotiations and communication with government agencies, industry bodies, and stakeholders both domestically and internationally.

Key responsibilities include providing specialist advice on relevant topics, conducting research, and developing submissions to support regulatory negotiations. Representing the department in engagements with international partners and Australian industry stakeholders, contributing to high-level advice for senior executives and the Minister, and managing branch communication channels are also crucial aspects of the position. Additionally, addressing establishment non-compliance issues and maintaining a strong understanding of relevant systems are integral. You will:

  • Work on topical issues, critical for the future exports of Australian
  • Liaise, negotiate and effectively communicate with Australian and overseas government agencies, industry bodies, and other internal and external stakeholders in support of technical market access
  • Provide technical or specialist advice and guidance on matters relating to animal health, biosecurity and food safety
  • Undertake research and developing technical submissions and briefings in support of technical market access
  • Represent the department during engagement with international trading partners and Australian industry
  • Contribute to content into high level written and verbal advice to senior executives and the Minister in support of the above activities 
The Ideal Person

To succeed in these roles, you will have the following attributes: 

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet deadlines, and manage competing tasks effectively
  • Knowledge of international food safety and trade regulations and market dynamics
  • Capacity to present complex information logically and concisely, especially regarding technical issues and policy proposals
  • Strong relationship-building skills to engage with internal and external stakeholders positively
  • Demonstrated professionalism and integrity in all interactions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information effectively
  • Proficiency in researching, analysing, and preparing accurate reports on technical issues
  • Ability to work independently, show leadership, and exercise sound judgment
Desirable/Mandatory Qualifications:
  • Highly desirable qualifications in relevant disciplines such as animal health, veterinary science, agriculture, science, international relations, regulation, food safety, business, or project management would be advantageous. 
Salary / Rate
  • $60/hr - $65/hr + 11% Superannuation
  • 6-month contract with strong extension prospects
  • Central Canberra location
