The Aboriginal Health Practitioner (Emergency Department) Role
The Aboriginal Health Practitioner - Emergency Department will work within the hospital setting to embed a stronger and more sustainable approach to support Aboriginal patients in hospital, or attending outpatients and Emergency Departments, through providing an 'Aboriginal lens' to health care and delivering cultural safe care. The Aboriginal Health Practitioner will also provide clinical intervention, assessment, care planning and education within their scope of practice. The Aboriginal Health Practitioner will promote engagement and increase the likelihood of Aboriginal client's engagement with treatment and care plans. They will provide acute and sub-acute health responses, support hospital avoidance and advise on length of stay in the acute sector and close to home services.

It also acknowledges the cultural determinants and particular complexities affecting the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people and the need for a holistic and multi-faceted health approach to service design and delivery.

Must have a certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care (Practice) or equivalent. Must hold a current registration with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice Board (ATSIHPBA). For specialised positions, must have completed training and/or education in specialisation stream.
The Flinders and Upper North Local Health Network has determined that an exemption to prefer Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants granted by the Equal Opportunity Tribunal of South Australia under sections 34(2) and 56(2) of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (SA) applies to this position. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage is considered essential and therefore a Confirmation of Aboriginality may be requested.
Must be flexible and willing to participate in a 7-day roster and may be required to work public holidays. Applicants are encouraged to discuss the flexible working arrangements for this role.
Appointment will be subject to a satisfactory Criminal History Check and appropriate immunisation requirements.

The provides acute services ranging from in-hospital care for adults and children by medical officers including outpatients. Our staff work in close partnership with community health services and Aboriginal health providers
