Join us as an Accountant in our Life Financial Control Team - 6-month contract.
- You'll be joining a tight knit, cohesive and collaborative team, who are passionate about supporting each other and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement in everything they do.
- You'll be responsible for the day-to-day accounting of Challenger Life Company (CLC).
- We work flexibly from our Sydney CBD Office where you can expect to work 3 days in the office and 2 days from home.
About the Team:
Life Financial Control is a team of 12 working towards the common goal of delivering the statutory results. Members of the team share common tasks as well as owning unique tasks depending on the individual's role and experience. The wider finance team includes group Financial Control, business performance, tax, and risk and actuarial, teams operate in a highly interactive and collaborative manner.
Role purpose:
To manage the general ledger of assigned entities/groups that are wholly owned by Challenger Life Company (CLC), providing accurate and timely information and ensuring the data supports all reporting and compliance requirements For example, statutory reporting, management reporting, tax lodgements, APRA reporting, capital reporting.
The Life Company is an interesting business with a complex balance sheet offering many opportunities to be involved in non-standard transactions; it's an environment that provides great exposer and variety to the finance professional that enjoys a challenge.
This person will be responsible for:
- Delivering accurate and timely month end ledger close for assigned entities.
- Ensuring transactions in assigned entities have been booked correctly in systems by Middle Office.
- Prepare and post monthly recurring and ad-hoc journals.
- Prepare consolidation entries for assigned groups & handling consolidation issues that arise.
- Run tax calculations where applicable and ensuring correct effective tax rate is achieved
- Monthly balance sheet reconciliations to source data and resolving reconciliation issues identified.
- BAS and Tax Return submissions.
- Preparation of statutory accounts for assigned entities where applicable.
- Assist with preparation of financial statements for CLC and explanatory notes.
- Preparation of audit files and dealing with auditors with regards to audit queries.
- Other ad hoc duties as required.
- Ongoing review of procedures and processes to identify opportunities to improve efficiencies, facilitate process changes and ensure appropriate controls are enforced to manage risks.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with across the business.
The skills you'll need:
You'll be CA / CPA (or equivalent) qualified, with at least 3 years post qualification experience within a Financial Control's environment with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. With a meticulous level of attention to detail you'll have a track record of being able to break down problems, identify key issues and remedy with a range of different options.
A strong user of MS Office in particular MS Excel, you'll be comfortable working with large amounts of data with the ability to synthesise into meaningful insights and analysis.
You'll also have:
- Working understanding of Tax & GST regulatory requirements.
- Experience of identifying, assessing, and evaluating key Financial Controls in a finance function
- Experience in accounting for various financial instruments desired but not essential.
- A working knowledge of the corporate regulatory environment, governance principles, corporate accountability and conduct frameworks and the process for managing risk in a large and complex business - ideally withing financial services.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment, you'll be as comfortable working collaboratively as you are when working independently.
