Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Financial Controller to join a General Insurance operation launching in Australia. This is a global underwriting leader providing best-in-class property, casualty and specialty reinsurance and insurance solutions.
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Financial Controller that will be responsible for overseeing all financial operations, ensuring compliance with accounting standards (especially AASB17) and having a strong background in general insurance.
Key Accountabilities:
- Preparing financial statements in accordance with Australian and International Accounting Standards, especially IFRS 17 / AASB 17
- Preparing monthly / quarterly / annual reports for management, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements
- Quarterly preparation and submission of APRA Returns
- Develop and implement financial policies, procedures, and controls to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
- Building processes and procedures that will cater for the growth of the business
- Set up the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions and transition to the Finance Operations Manager
- Preparing and analysing budgets and forecasts
- Ensuring compliance with government regulations
- Monthly Balance Sheet account reconciliation
- Preparation and lodgement of the various indirect taxes and duties (GST, Stamp Duty, etc)
- Annual preparation of the APRA returns and working with the External Auditors
- Co-ordinate the annual submissions to APRA
- Working with the Appointed Actuary and Chief Risk Officer
- Support with the preparation of the annual ICAAP Report and 3 Year Business Plan
- Work with external tax advisers in preparing the annual tax returns, Fringe Benefits Tax Return and Transfer Pricing documentation
- Work closely with managers across all departments of the organisation
- Stay updated on industry trends, regulatory changes, and best practices in financial reporting
Additional duties include:
- Work with the CFO and other International Finance/Actuarial teams in the testing and roll out of various systems (new General Ledger, Reinsurance, Data Lake and IFRS/AASB 17 Reporting Tool)
- Set up the APRA reporting process using the new systems being rolled out
- Set-up and document processes and procedures on the new systems
Qualifications, Education & Experience:
- CPA or CA qualified
- Proven experience within the General Insurance industry
- Strong knowledge of IFRS 17 / AASB17 reporting standards
- Experience with the various indirect taxes associated with general insurance policies and filings with the relevant Government departments
Knowledge, Skills & Competencies:
- Excellent understanding of financial accounting principles and practices
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex financial data
- Advanced proficiency in financial software and Microsoft Excel and experience in implementing systems
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with stakeholders at all levels
- Strong leadership and people management skills
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
