The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) implements the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which is one of the biggest social reforms in the country since Medicare. As an Agency, we support more than 600,000 participants with a significant and permanent disability, and the families and carers of those living with disability. For many Australians, this will be the first time they receive the disability support they need. The NDIA is designed to enhance the quality of life and increase economic and social participation for people with disability and will mean a peace of mind for every Australian. 

A new role awaits

Are you looking for a position where you are making a difference to the lives of thousands of Australians? The NDIA has an opportunity to take and do exactly that as a member of the Legal Operations (LO) team in the position of APS6 Legal Practice and Capability.

The Legal Practice and Capability branch sits within the Chief Counsel Division of the National Disability Insurance Agency. The LO team supports the Chief Counsel and General Counsel Divisions of the Agency with a range of legal operational and/or administrative functions including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Management of the outward facing Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) email inbox, including correspondence from the AAT, participants/their representatives and lawyers.
  • Triage of AAT applications and preparation of case summaries.
  • Compilation and lodgement of tribunal documents within statutory timeframes.
  • Allocation of AAT matters to case managers, internal lawyers and external law firms.
  • Triage of requests for legal advice from Agency business areas then response or allocation to the relevant legal team for action.
  • Response Coordination of FOI requests and Complaints for AAT matters.
  • Maintaining accurate and current record keeping practices using the Agency’s systems and databases.
  • Developing and nurturing relationships between various internal and external stakeholders relevant to an AAT application or request for legal advice including the Tribunal, participants/advocates, external lawyers and Agency staff.

Where you can add value

As an APS6 team leader in the Legal Operations team, you will be responsible for managing and leading a team who support a range of legal administrative functions for the Chief Counsel and General Counsel Divisions of the Agency.

Bring your legal knowledge and experience, your attention to detail, as well as a passion for working with people with a disability to provide exceptional legal operational support in this role.

This support may include the management and oversight of activities including:

  • Managing various aspects of the AAT process from the initial lodgement of an AAT application to the compilation of Tribunal documents and managing. correspondence through to the outcome of an AAT matter.
  • Assessing and managing risk as you triage and allocate matters to AAT case managers, internal lawyers and external law firms.
  • Supporting the resolution of interlocutory matters and hearings as required by providing instruction to internal lawyers.
  • Researching and reviewing documents to support the draft response for complaints and FOI requests in the Chief Counsel and General Counsel divisions.
  • Coaching and mentoring team members to uplift capability and ensure staff are cross skilled.
  • Contributing to business improvement activities, including the development of systems, processes and guidance materials, to improve consistency and accuracy of work.

While this role is ideally performed from ACT Canberra, VIC Geelong, VIC Richmond, NSW Surry Hills, NSW Parramatta, QLD Brisbane, SA Adelaide, remote working arrangements may be considered. We intend to fill this role in an ongoing capacity, however non-ongoing roles up to 12 months with the possibility of extension up to 2 years may be offered.

Successful candidates will be required to undergo a pre-employment National Police History check, Worker Screening check and/or Working with Children Check (where required) and provide evidence of Australian Citizenship.
