About theGuardian:

The Guardian for Children andYoung People (the Guardian) is an independent statutory officerthat promotes and advocates for the rights and best interests ofchildren and young people who are under the guardianship, or in thecustody, of the chief executive of the Department for ChildProtection (DCP). The functions and powers of the Guardian are setout in section 26 of the Children and Young People (Oversight andAdvocacy Bodies) Act 2016.

The role of Child and YoungPerson’s Visitor (CYP Visitor) is held by the Guardian,ex-officio, and has responsibility for regular visiting andinspection of residential care facilities to monitor the safety andwellbeing of children and young people, in accordance with thefunctions set out in section 118 of the Child and Young Person(Safety) Act 2017.

The Guardian also holds the roleof Training Centre Visitor (TCV) under the Youth JusticeAdministration Act 2016 in relation to children and young peopledetained in Kurlana Tapa Youth Justice Centre (the Centre) andexercises similar functions in respect of that role.

About theRole:

Are you a dynamic individual witha robust background in consultancy and advocacy? If so, we inviteyou to join our team as an Advocate (CYPVP) and become a drivingforce in championing the rights and well-being of children andyoung people.

As an Advocate, you will play acrucial role in fulfilling the statutory functions held by CYPVisitor, acting as a Guardian. Your responsibilities willinclude:

  • Conducting visits and inspections of residential care houses and relevant facilities.
  • Communicating with children and young people living in residential care houses and other relevant facilities and acting as their advocate to resolve issues relating to their care.
  • Working in collaboration with other members of the Guardian’s advocacy team to share responsibility for answering queries from children and young people within the Guardian’s broader mandate and undertaking individual and systemic advocacy, when required.
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date case notes and records
  • Contributing to reporting and monitoring requirements in the office
  • Working with other staff on projects and policy work that address systemic issues.

Qualifications:

  • Desirable an appropriate degree or equivalent qualification which gives eligibility for full membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers OR relevant tertiary qualification.

SpecialConditions:

The successful applicant isrequired to gain a Department for Human Services (DHS) working withchildren check (WWCC) prior to being employed which is required tobe renewed every five years before expiry. The incumbent will berequired to undertake RRHAN –EC (Responding to Risks of Harm,Abuse and Neglect - Education Care) Facilitator Lead (Masterclass)extended course or the online (Fundamentals) course which will berequired to be updated every three years.

Remuneration:

ASO6 $97,022 - $102,626 per annum(1.0 FTE), plus superannuation.
