Job description

The Honourable Justice Sloss is seeking a legally qualified individual, preferably with at least one year's post-admission experience at a law firm (or similar), to be her Associate commencing in early May 2024.
Justice Sloss sits in the Commercial Court, where she case‑manages and hears a wide range of complex commercial proceedings, including claims under contract and statute, claims for relief in equity and urgent claims for injunctive relief. Justice Sloss also manages and hears Corporations List proceedings involving applications by liquidators and other external administrators, shareholder oppression claims, and related corporations matters.
The role offers the successful applicant the opportunity to gain invaluable experience across the Commercial Court and closely observe the work of a judge and counsel.
Candidates should have an excellent academic record, strong research skills, an ability to write clearly and concisely and a genuine interest in commercial and corporations law. You will also be a ‘self-starter' who is organised, diligent and uses initiative, and is able to work both independently and in a small team.
The Commercial Court is a judge-managed list so the preferred candidate will require an ability to manage work in chambers and in court, as well as deal with a high volume of administrative demands.
Duties include:
Undertaking high level legal research;
Assisting with the production of orders, judgments, papers and presentations including proof-reading and editing;
Performing a wide range of administrative tasks, including managing the demands of a Judge-Managed List;
Acting as chambers' first point of contact (particularly when her Honour is the designated (after-hours) Commercial Court Duty Judge), liaising with other judges, Court staff, the public, the media and the profession; and
Undertaking the duties of an Associate in Court (including the set-up and management of virtual hearings).
How to apply
Click the ‘Apply Now' button, ensuring you include the following in your application:
